This is one amazing forum, have been an avid reader for sometime. Ive just joined.
Were traveling to Italy nex month (Sep 25 through Oct 4)
Ive been trying to get a decent deal on a car rental for that duration. We want a Passat (or equivalent) or larger.
The best I have got till now are with:
Hertz: CDP: TRAVEL PARTNERS CLUB. Does it require me to provide some ID?
Avis: K44440 – chairman’s preferred card gives the best rate. But I am not a chairman. :p
National: Contract ID: 5760333 gives a good rate but Im not sure if I can use it.
Now, the main reason for my thread is most of the discussions are related to car rental in the US and almost all coupons cannot be used in Italy. I wanted to know if there are good rates/coupons that can be used in Italy. Ill be renting from Rome (FCO).
There are some Italy specific car rental cos like Europcar, Sixt, AUTOEUROPA etc. Does anyone have good coupons/codes for renting a car in Italy?
Help much appreciated.
Benjamin

Europcar and Sixt are "Italy specific"?
Guess I've missed out on some major news!

Try looking up rates on country specific websites...
sixt.it, avis.it, hertz.it, etc and see what rates you get then. BTW, if it is your first time in Italy and probably Rome specially, then you better think twice if you want to go this route of even renting a car. Note that you cannot go to central areas of the city with a car, unless you have accommodation there, and it can be hectic/racy at times so, if it is a must to have a car, do not rent a car without full insurance coverage, just in case. In Rome, streets are narrow, parking is scarce, parking fines are horrid, there is gazillion of scooters, without navigation you will get lost etc...
Welcome to FT!

Thanks sindjic.
I did try getting rates from the sites that you have mentioned but I feel there is scope for improvement.:)
We are planning a 9 day holiday in Italy and Switzerland, this is my first time in Europe. We are planning to stay in Rome for 2 days and then move on to see Naples, Pisa, Bologna and Milan. We also would like to visit Zurich and the Swiss alps if time permits.
Given this itinerary, would you recommend renting a car in the Rome airport on arrival and return it there just before we board the flight back home?
My dad's been to Italy several times and I have been to the US, this will be my first time in Europe though.
Thanks sindjic.

my 2cents, get a car only if you arrive in milan and wants to go to the alps. ok, if you want to drive along the tuscany countryside and take in everything alog, rent a car in naples AFTER your tour there and drive north, by-passing Roma

FWIW, we were in Rome just a few months ago, and then travelled on to Venice & Florence. Took trains between all cities, it was a great way to travel. As much as I liked Rome, you could not pay me to drive in the heart of the city. People I know who have rented only do it for touring the countryside, i.e. Tuscany.
