As of yesterday, a new version of Red's software is being deployed. Significant points of the upgrade:

** Speed increase and more stability. (25% increase in speed of functionality - less lag when you press a button or switch between functions)

** E-mail receipts of purchases.

** Option to listen to on-board playlist music while gaming, rather than in-game soundtracks.

** Ability to choose different speeds for fast forward/rewind of video on-demand playback, a la DVR functionality.

** Additional "Shop" items: $4 Help packs..."Help, I have a headache", etc. (humorous first aid eco-friendly packages for headaches, body aches, sleeping...)

** More on-demand content from premium providers. (30+ on-demand films)

** BoingBoing.net dedicated video channel.

And there's yet one more scheduled software upgrade coming before the end of the year: more features to come, and a revised live TV line-up.

When I read the title, I thought it referred to cabin upgrades to MCS or First being offered through Red!

Anyway, good stuff, I'll briefly check it out on 944 SFO-LAX tonight. I wonder if they charge for the Shop items in MCS or First, or if it's included the way food and drinks are?

Now they just need to have an audio channel devoted to the awesome boarding and lavatory music! :D

FWIW, the TV reception and overall responsiveness of the system seemed better on my recent (8/28) flight.
