Just wondering if anyone can give me some suggestions? Not sure if this is the right area...
I will be staying in Hong Kong for around 7-8 nights and was thinking to stay 4 or 5 nights in the same hotel and the other 2-3 nights at another. Is this a good plan or should I just stick with one and forget about hopping?
Hotels I was thinking of are:
Langham Place Hotel in Mongkok and Intercontinental Grand Stamford
I was thinking about the Intercontinental Hong Kong but it is out of my price range.
Langham place was looking at Vital Room or Essential and the IC GS I was looking at just anormal King bed room.
Are both these hotels convenient?
Thanks,
Kenn.

Hi,
Convenient for food, shopping, sightseeing, relaxation, normal touristy things I guess :)
Budget would be approx HKD1500-1700 per night for 2 adults (King Bed).
I will be in HKG between 27th Dec - 3rd Jan
So I will be spending new years in HK. Probably the IC will be better for the New year fireworks view??? Not sure?
Cheers,
K.

The IC Grand Stanford is not very convenient, mostly because it's far from the subway trains.
For New Year, there had been some lightshows centered around the ifc building in Central for the past 2 years, but 1) it is not 100% certain it'll happen again for 2010 - in fact the 2009 one was in doubt for a while; 2) it is not major fireworks like that for the 2nd night of the Chinese New Year; 3) you can't see the ifc building directly from the Grand Stanford.

Check out the Executive Parlour room (http://www.metroparkhotel.com/en/rooms.php#suite) at the Metropark Causeway Bay. They have special rate of stay of 7 nights or more. This is a good mid range hotel and all Executive Parlour rooms have harbour view.
There is a previous discussion thread about this hotel:
IMO, no need to do hotel hopping. HK is tiny enough that everything is close to the MTR stations.
The only time I'd consider it if you:
1) Need nights for status (which doesn't seem to be the case).
2) A hotel has an outstanding deal but only on certain nights.

Thanks Guys.
Is mongkok in a bad part of town or it's fine even late at night? Say around 12 midnight.
Is the Grand stamford IC far from a MTR?

There aren't really any bad parts of HK. Mongkok is pretty lively all night but there's nothing to be worried about.
The Grand Stanford is roughly equidistant from TST East an Hung Hom - about a quarter of a mile from each.

There are plenty of "businesses" within a few blocks of the Langham Place hotel that most visitors shouldn't visit, but walking around is perfectly safe any time of the day.

Do you mean mongkok is a low class area? dirty?

Google images for "Mongkok" and see for yourself. Ask if that's what you like.

If you're picking Western New Year for your honeymoon then HK is a strange place to do it. There is no major New Year celebration here - that's at Chinese New Year. And HK is a real live city with all the grotty bits that this entails.
I think you'd be better off in Sydney.

If you do a keyword search on this forum and also on Google you will come up with tons and tons of up to date information and also ex pat sites that are practically live

Mong Kok is perfectly safe at midnight -- in fact the streets are jammed with people, many stores are still open and in fact busier than at 9 am! It is a poorer part of town, so full of real people doing real shopping, and English is not so common. Quite charming and a great experience; even if you go into a restaurant where they speak no English, they will be very friendly and helpful, but expect to find lots of food that you can't quite identify. All of it delicious, but not for the meek.

Isn't Langham Place double (or triple) the price of the Eaton? It certainly is twice as good (and the rooms are probably triple the floor space). Really no contest if price is similar or not a factor. A very cool feature of LP is that it is next door to a modern vertical shopping mall building which has a huge atrium and very tall single-span escalator (almost in the amusement ride category). Fun.

How long does it take to walk from Grand Stamford IC to the MTR?

Thanks. Yeah I think its around $50 difference per night for the rate.
The other hotel I was thinking about was the IC Grand Stamford???
Basically when I arrive at HKG I will stay for 6 nights and then I am off to japan, then when I finish with Japan I will return to HKG for 2 nights. So I am deciding which one to spend 6 nights in and which one for 2 nights in.... Then I am off to SYD. The IC HK is out of my budget unfortunately even though its for my honeymoon....
Cheers,
K.

The IC Stamford is really charmless (like an office building and middle of nowhere -- it is for people doing business next door). Nothing like the other IC (and the price reflects this difference). Can't recommend it as there are dozens of better hotels in HKG for the same price (unless you are RA at IC and they still give fabulous benefits).
The LP is easily worth USD 150 per night more than the Eaton, so if only USD 50 more it is a bargain (or the Eaton is priced exceptionally high). You'd be happy with 6 days at Langham Place. Maybe spend the 2 days on the Island, which is the opposite side of Hong Kong (both geographically and in spirit). Le Meridien is often cheap (again the location is a bit remote, but a great hotel if you don't mind walking). Personally I would try to splurge for 2 nights at either Peninsula or IC (yes, expensive, but worth it and memories will last a lifetime). The Pen Rolls transfer to the airport is quite memorable and not that expensive for what you get (and compared to other cities).

It is 0.5 mile from the IC Grand Stanford to the trains at the MTR Tsimshatsui station. Half of it above ground along Mody Road (passing a park, two malls and the Kowloon Shangri-La), and half of it in an underground walkway. It is a bit shorter to get to the Hung Hom East/West Rail terminus or the TST-East West Rail station.

Thanks guys for the info. I read reviews on trip advisor for the IC GS and it wasn't that bad :) But I guess I will take your advice. The IC GS is the same price as Langham Place....
Do you mean if I stay at the peninsula they will give me complimentary rolls royce to the airport?

Yes, the Conrad is good - especially if you can get up on the higher Executive Floors.
The harbour view from the HK side is not as good as that from the Kowloon side, but 6 nights in the Langham Place and 2 in the Conrad (both of them up on the higher club floors, which have the best views) isn't a bad mix.

Hi,
Thanks. I think I will go with this combination. I think conrad was reasonable with the advance purchase. Is there another hotel which is pretty much the same as the conrad on pricing and quality?
Cheers,
K.

Is there another hotel which is pretty much the same as the conrad on pricing and quality?Prices in HKG fluctuate with occupancy so without saying your price nobody can tell you what hotel is "pretty much" the same price. As for quality, Conrad is good but at the bottom of the top hotels. So it is better than Le Meridien but worse than Shangri La etc. Probably the best Hilton in the world, fwiw, making it a good choice (Hilton pricing has been low these days, so you probably got a better price than elsewhere). Much better than the IC GS

Thanks guys. I will convert it to USD. I am from Sydney Australia. For the 2 nights that I want to stay at Conrad it works out to be USD256 a night inclusive of taxes etc. It is a mid week stay, on weekdays.
Cheers,

Go with the Conrad. Depends on the specific date, but you aren't likely to find better for under USD 400.

its been over 10 years since my last visit to hong kong so i pretty much remember next to nothing about the city....will be there next month for about a week....i was leaning towards staying at the conrad but am not sure....any advice????i guess the few questions i have are:
as a diamond i can pretty much expect an upgrade to an executive room, but if the hotel is full & i don't get the upgrade, do i still get access to the lounge????
how is the lounge????
what is the closest starbucks to the conrad (silly question but the mrs. wants to know)????
how is the area around the hotel????
if we were to make a day trip to macau then is this property close to the ferry terminals????
thanks in advance for the replies....

Conrad is on top of Pacific Place, the up-scale shopping mall in-town. http://www.pacificplace.com.hk/en/
Behind it is the Hong Kong Park, one of the biggest park at Hong Kong side and next to the park is the peak tram.
A up-scale super market is located at Basement of the shopping mall, and while crossing the pedestrian flyover you have the normal Park'n shop
Nothing really happening here. you need to take the tramway that recently bought by a French company to head Central / Causeway Bay, or take the subway for TST / Mong Kok. Reminder is that the platforms gets super jam pack at peak hour which if you crossing the harbour, you will do Admiralty ==> Central ==> TST on the red line
if we were to make a day trip to macau then is this property close to the ferry terminals????
Reasonable close with less than HKD 30 on taxi (if no traffic jam) or 2 MTR station
