Not a complaint.

We had the pleasure of flying from Frankfurt to Helsinki on an Embraer RJ. By the luck of the draw we got the exit row. Normally, as good as it gets in coach, right?

Rule difference 1 - they don't allow any hand luggage at your feet in the exit row. Same rule as the bulkhead. Oh, well, I got my Kindle, threw my bag in the overhead, and settled in.

Rule difference 2 - no electronics while the seat belt sign is on. Whoops. Nice in flight mag, though.

They turned the seat belt sign off very quickly, and served a snack - a really good tuna sandwich. We were happy. I would fly Finnair again, but I would know these things.

I had understood not having luggage in an exit row was standard and in fact a good thing ....

Both of these rules are standard on pretty much any airline I've ever flown (for fairness sake let's add "in the last 10 years").

Frankly I'd be scared to fly on an airline that allowed hand luggage on the floor at exit rows - there's a reason why they are called "exit rows" after all. And it only applies for take-off and landing (i.e. when the seat belt sign is on at both ends of the flight), so in-flight you are free to take your bag from the overhead and put it on the floor.

As for the electronics off -rule, again standard stuff. Some airlines (or cabin crew) seem to be more strict on enforcing this - sometimes you can get away with listening to your IPod all through the landing and snapping digital photos, but on all airlines I've been on they definitely announce it (ok, I can't be sure for a couple of Ukrainian carriers as they didn't make announcements in English... :)).

Most airlines I flew have the same rules both for exit row and electronics.

AA does not. Most of my flying is on AA. Some AA captains have a habit of not ever turning off the seat belt sign, so this second rule would be a real problem.

Yeah, that's true that AA (and most other American carriers) do keep the seat belt sign on forever. Most European ones do switch it off after passing 3000 meters or so, some 2-3 minutes after take off.

I think the issue here is mostly the phrasing, "When the seat belt sign is on" in reference to electronics usage really means "during take-off and landing". Although I think I've been told to put my IPod away once or twice even during turbulence when the s/b sign was switched off, but those are rare occurrences.

The first rule is more common than the second rule, presuming you are referring also about the seatbelt sign even at times other than take-off and landing.

Most carriers I fly don't care to tell passengers to always put electronic items away when the seatbelt sign goes on during flight.
