Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - LAX-HKG 3rd Flight Coming Back & Equipment Change

Just checked my future itineraries and discovered that (1) my November trip on CX883/882 will be operated by 777-300ER instead of 747-400 and (2) the February 2010 schedule indicates that CX884/885 are returning with 744 equipment so that CX once again will be operating the third daily pair of flights. I sure didn't expect those flights to return even though technically they had been "temporarily suspended" and were supposed to return.
If this is "old news," please accept my apologies.

I think CX bought their B777-300ER , the first priority is to eliminate the fuel stop in Winter...

Sounds good for everyone and hopefully this year we won't see anyone saying "I am stuck at TPE / ICN doing fuel-stop"

Those flights are not displayed nor bookable through the CX website nor expedia. Schedules on CX website and expedia are both also not showing those flights. Could be just a system glitch?

But they are indeed displaying CX882/883 to be flown with the 77A making all LAX operations a 77A.

They do show on ExpertFlyer, albeit not on the CX website. Maybe insider and travel agent types can reconcile the apparent discrepancy. Do CX884/885 show on any other booking tools?
I do agree that for many of us, traveling in F on the 74A is somewhat preferable to the 77A, but the dreaded CX883 winter fuel-stop in ICN (or on even more limited occasions in TPE on CX881 when that flight previously was operated with the 744 or 74A) has caused me to to to miss on several occasions the morning HKG-BKK connection.

Sabre is not showing those flights as well.

As for the 74A, there is still the option of flying the SFO gateway.

Because Dec 17 is the last day of operation with 74A. The news is here (http://airlineroute.blogspot.com/2009/08/cathay-pacific-phase-out-747-lax-flight.html). Consider yourself lucky/unlucky?

^ Enjoy the trip.... and we all love trip report! If CX884/885 does come back with 74A, then we would still see the jumbo in LAX. Somehow I doubt it until it is confirmed.

my reservations for 19 Feb 2010 on flt 882 showed 74A on both the AA site and CX site last week, now it is a 77A.

CX884/885 was supposed to return this Winter but dropped.

Hmmm....LAX going from once 3x 74A daily to just 2x 77A daily. Oh how the mighty has fallen. :p

Last time I heard the 3x 74A wasn't full anyway... particularly the afternoon 884/885 was depressing. I took the 74A flight last month, and it was less than half full, so I guess the 74A->77A move will help right-size, lower the cost, and eliminate the fuel stop.

BTW looks like the 74A taken out of the LAX route is being placed into one of the AKL flights in the upcoming winter schedule.

In one way this is actually an upgrade as the 77A has more overall premium capacity (6F/57J) vs the 74A (9F/46J), even though Y capacity is reduced from 324 to 238. Should be really good for yields.

AKL will get the 74A this coming winter. Lucky me I can fly there with CX on my NOV business trip to AKL.

Yes. Having two daily 77As doing this route is probably the correct amount of capacity that should be allocated for this market. And I agree that they are finally having the right aircraft cost effective wise for this route as it will not 1) result in over capacity and 2) the frequent costly fuel stops as these two factors have plagued this route over the last 4-5 years.

When they came to the decision to launch the 3rd LAX daily (with a 744) four years ago, my immediate reaction was what on earth were their brains thinking?

BTW, I don't expect any increases to any NA routes until there is some light to the end of the tunnel of the current global economy.

I'll fly out of SFO over LAX any day. Not only the airport, but I hate the L.A. region as well. What a smoggy dump. Glad there are other better places to live in America.

Ironically you're flying to HKG which must have way worse pollution than LA.
