Wonderful place to visit!
When I went 6 months ago, we just arrived and found a motel that looked new (I forgot the name). It was one block from the beach, painted yellow and blue, had a pool, located behind that old big behemoth motel that is there on the beach. Most places are just simple motels so don't expect too much. Stick with something that looks newer, expect to pay 250-500 pesos per night. Make sure the A/C works!
check lonely planet or tripadvisor for some names and ideas.
enjoy the wonderful drive past salt beds and be sure to head south to "los gigantes" for a nice walk along the 30 ft cacti (bring H2O)
