I'm on a waiting list for an upgrade from coach to business class on a flight from YVR-HKG in November.

Anybody has recent experience on getting the WL cleared? How long did it take?

Thanks!

What tier of MPO are you currently at? Which flight are you taking? On which date?

MPO status and loading of a particular flight can be the big difference.

And if you are getting the award using another person's miles, what is the MPC tier status of that person?

I hold Green MPO, flying CX889 from YVR - HKG, K class one-way ticket on November 1, 2009. My CX781 (HKG-SUB) has been cleared for upgrade.

I have slightly more than 70% of the miles required. I'll be getting miles transferred from a Silver MPO holder and do small top-up (since it's less expensive to buy top-up than to transfer the last block).

It's only been a week since I requested the upgrade but Im just wondering how long it may take based on recent experience.

I have always been put on WL when requesting for an upgrade. I always have to do it at the check-in counter.

Any suggestion on how to increase my chances?

Thanks for all your help!

Any suggestion on how to increase my chances?Travel enough to be Diamond and you always get it if the the plane isn't already fully booked. Otherwise not much you can do.

You may need to check the availability on Cathay website from time to time. Why not you transfer your mileage into your friend's account? He has silver status and should have better chance.

OP has more than 70% of the required miles. Transferring that many miles to another person's account will be expensive, especially when the other person is only Silver and the priority may not be high enough to secure a seat immediately.
