Many airlines allow penalty-free cancellation, even on non-refundable fares, until some point the next day. However, many airlines don't, e.g., Virgin America, Jetblue.
Orbitz has a policy (which may or may not be new) allowing cancellation until 10:00 P.M. CT the following day: https://faq.orbitz.com/cgi-bin/orbitz_faq.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=11695.
The FAQ lists as one of the exceptions to the policy "certain airlines." When I wrote to Orbitz asking who the "certain airlines" were, the response was:
The two airlines that are an exception from the 'Courtesy Cancellation' option are Spirit Airlines and AirTran Airlines. For Air Tran, they allow a Courtesy Cancel within 4 hours of booking. For Spirit Airlines requires that all courtesy cancellations, if permitted, be completed directly with them either via their website or on the phone. If you would like to visit their web site you can go to www.spiritair.com.
So, it appears that one can get a next-day cancellation window on all airlines except Spirit and AirTrain by booking on Orbitz, even if the airline does not offer that window by booking directly on the airline's site.
