I am booked SFO-HKG CX873/872 and this will be my first experience with the herringbone seats. They appear very compartmentalized and designed for privacy which is good if travelling alone. I have found a lot of advice on specific seats and upper vs main deck but little about which pair of seats is best to allow one to converse with a companion. Should this be a concern? Any comments would be greatly appreciated

You can't converse with a companion in these seats unless you stand up and peer over the dividers. That's why so many people hate them.
Personally I value the flat bed above everything else so it doesnn't bother me that much.

As KACommuter says, quite simply you can't. If you want to converse with your partner in flight while seated then travel economy or first (where one of you can move to the other person's suite).

As KACommuter and christep said, CX's new J is not for people to have conversation. Some people really hate that. My family loves it. We talk all the time on the ground, but everyone have their own routines on a flight. We just do not want to bother others or be bothered.
However, you can stand up and talk over the partition if one is sitting in the seat immediately ahead/behind.
My opinion is if you want to converse - get seats across from one another that's your best shot easiest too when seated. I'm not a fan of CX herringbone and went back to BA when in J. Course F on CX to me is la creme de la creme!

Yes this is your best option, though still not really such a great option, because you'll have to shout at each other over the aisle which is not easy with the high ambient noise on most aircraft.
As others have pointed out, CX J is no good if you want to talk to anyone. However, I'd take the new flat bed over the old angled lie-flat seat any day.

That pretty much confirms what I thought. Thanks for the information
