Both the Wall Street Journal (http://www.wsjwine.com/) and the New York Times (http://nytwineclub.com/), the San Francisco Chronicle (http://www.signaturewines.com/sfchroniclewineclub/) and others have started wine clubs to bring in a few extra dollars.
Is it just me or is it weird that papers who review wineries, are now selling those wines?

I think the concern is that "impartial reviews" on wines can now have a financial impact to the company. The reviews themselves become de facto advertisements, even without the statement "to purchase this product, visit our affiliate's website".

i could not disagree more. the wine reviewers at the wsj are about the only people on the wsj that i think have any integrity. FT also has an excellent and honest reviewer, although i think she has a palate that could not distinguish pond scum from perrier. although i no longer receive either, i did not think their wine offerings included reviews.
at the same time, what i think is the most widely distributed wine review journal in the usa is to my mind far and away the most whored.
the current food reviewer at the wash post may have integrity, i do not know, but the prior ones were outrageously abusive of their position. one of the prior food reviewers for the nyt was well known in the industry for her large hats. both were prepared special foods.
i have not seen the price structure for the wine club wines, but would buy if i thought them to be a deal.
while on the subject, wines till sold out.com frequently has bargin priced wine. they also frequently publish reviews by somebody named Newman(i think) the wines he is reviewing, he represents...............
