Apologies in advance if this has been covered (I did a search but didn't see anything).

I'm looking to fly one way LHR to NRT and it appears that one way tickets are going for £1400 when round trips in the same time frame are around £550. Is this always the case with JAL or are there ways to get around it (ie. with an agent)? Are one ways a no go on JAL?

nevermind... realized that you are referring to you fare to get to japan.

This is the case with most airlines. You might find a consolidator who can sell you a cheaper one-way -- student-oriented travel agents are often good for this -- but the airlines will generally reserve discounted fares for round trips.

Have you checked any other airlines such as BA?
Are their oneway fares much cheaper than round trip?

Usually, one way fare is less restrictive or or no restriction as the full fare, and round trip is more restricted with a lot of conditions attached.

Many people purchase roundtrip and throw away the return portion in order to save money.
However, airlines have right to charge the difference(if the one way is more expensive than round trip) although it does not happen often.
