Hello there!
I was just curious about the easiest, but most scenic way out of Phoenix to Sedona, and then en route to the final destination of Flagstaff.
thanks in advance!

Patrick, not sure when you are traveling or where you are stopping but right now parts of 89A are closed between Prescott and Jerome due to a brush fire that is getting too close to the highway.

IMO, it is definitely worth a digression off I-17 to go through Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon on 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff.

thanks for the great information folks...:-)
I am starting the road trip from PHX this Friday, and will cut through Sedona en route to Flagstaff.
Also, I will make note of the fires and plan accordingly...

+1, and if you enjoy the beers enjoy a nice pit stop at Oak Creek Brewery. Yum. You can eat there too and buy a growler for when you get to Flagstaff.

Certainly Phoenix to Flagstaff all the way on 17 is not that scenic.

I-17 contains an interesting feature as a result of the expanding/twinning of the highway to two separate roadways at times: You'll see traffic coming in the opposite direction on your right.

I'd also like to add how beautiful 89A is north of Sedona. Be aware though that as it's summer you might hit traffic heading through Sedona.
Also, once you reach the top of 89A where it rejoins I-17, if you stay straight you can go to the Flagstaff Airport if you need to use the bathroom. The parking is free and the restrooms are nice. Plus it's a fun little airport for five minutes ;)

I am sure your trip is already over but if you go again, coming into Flagstaff from the north (like you are coming from the Grand Canyon) is an awesome drive, some pretty steep windy roads through rockys and mountainous terrain...awesome in the fall
