Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Are There Still CX Planes From LAX-HKG Using Recliners And Not Flat Beds In J?
We have an LAX-HKG flight in December. Booked in seat 12D on Flight 881, returning in seat 15A on flight 880.
AA shows flight 881 as being on a 773. Seatguru says that 773s, as opposed to 77As, still have recliners, and not flat beds, in business class. The AA site is sometimes wrong about the type of plane, etc.
So, I just thought I would check here if there are any LAX-HKG flights still running 777-300s, rather than 777-300ERs, and if they have recliners, rather than flat beds.
Anybody know for sure?

777-300s have never done long haul routes (they don't have the range). All 777s on long haul are 777-300ERs with the awful cubicle beds.

Thanks. I figured as much. Although they might have installed the new Olympus seats by the time we go in December. In any event, I'll take an "awful cubicle bed" over a recliner anytime. As long as I can turn on my side, I can sleep no matter how uncomfortable the padding or how claustophobic. With even a lushly padded recliner, I'll be awake the whole flight.

The "new Olympus seats" are "the awful cubicle beds". All B747 and B777-300ER have them now, plus some A340/330s.

I read that first before I asked the question.
If you actually read it you wouldn't need to ask your question. Quoting from the faq , "Olympus: Guaranteed":
"Los Angeles
Flights: CX880/1 operates non-stop daily. CX882/3 operates non-stop daily.
Equipment: 74A (2 times weekly) and 77A (5 times weekly) mix for CX880/1. 74A for CX882/3.
Olympus: Guaranteed.
Tech stop warning: Flights operated by the 74A may need to make a technical stop en route from Los Angeles to Hong Kong due to heavy head winds.
Upcoming schedule changes: All flights on this route are gradually being migrated to 77A operations."
If you actually read it you wouldn't need to ask your question.
The FAQ says nothing about whether the 773s flying LAX-HKG have been converted. In fact, it says that there are no 773s flying that route. And my confirmation says that the plane is a 773, not a 77A. So, the issue was not addressed.

Some sites report the 773 when Cathay flies the 77A
The flight LAX-HKG (and return) is only flown by the 77A or the 74A, so if you're seeing 773, it means 77A

CX's 777-300 is a regional setup and does not have the leg to do LAX-HKG non-stop. The only CX fleets that can do LAX-HKG non-stop are 744, 77W(77A), and 343 (with heavy payload restriction.) So one would pretty much only see 744 or 77W(77A) in LAX (and in fact, CX will convert all 744 LAX flights into 77W(77A) in mid-December.) In your case, 77W(77A) for sure.
All the 744s and 77Ws have the new lie-flat J seats.
AA's website probably just doesn't care to distinguish the 773 or 773ER(77W/77A).
Enjoy the flight!

perhaps this SHOULD be more explicit in the sticky then rather than flaming the (misinformed) OP

I read the sticky and searched for the debates re: the 77A vs 74A... I've only flown the 74A. I'm flying out of LAX next July to HKG in J... should I try to fly out of SFO to fly on the 74A upstairs, which sounds like general consensus is that it is nicer? Also seems like upgrading to F or finding award seats on F will be more difficult on the 77A since there are fewer F seats... and finally, I'm also reading that the 74's are all converting to 77's anyway so I'm wondering if choosing a route based on aircraft a year out really makes much sense...
Opinions welcome...:D

I love flying in 747s generally. Especially if in F i really like being in the nose without a galley and lavs in front of me (reduced traffic).
That said, the air quality on the new 77As seems to be much better (i.e. humidity seems to be higher, so long flight is more comfortable).

I think for J, it isn't that much difference. Yes, you get more space upstairs on J in 74A and it's quieter, but I actually think even the back (large) J section on 77A is quite a nice ride AND overall they tend to be newer than the 74As (the wear and tear on the new product happens quickly). In F, it's a different story overall...there is just something about the nose of a 747 that is much nicer IMO (and the bathrooms are bigger and have a window on 74A vs 77A in F). If F isn't full and you get a chance, I'd chose 74A.

I have flown on the A330, 77A and 74A all in the last couple of months, however I found the oppostie to be true... my 77A was all tatty and worn and the 74A was sparkling new (well, it seemed it)! So I really guess YMMV!
The huge difference of course is the size of the seats. upper deck 74A were just fantastic - mountains of room and I'm 6'3.
Like really - I got lost in the amount of room!

Yea, I guess it depends on the plane. Interesting about the room upstairs on 74A...since I'm not particularly tall (5' 10", about 178cm) I just never really paid too much attention to the difference except for the additional shoulder space (a plus), so I'm usually quite happy on 77A as well. And I had an odd occurance with that addtl shoulder space upstairs on 74A once, once a while back when 74A was still doing YVR-HKG I recall a flight where the extra shoulder space was so ratty that the additional seat "cushion" which makes up the space b/w the seat and the curving wall (the "cushion" is actually hard plastic with some fabric glued on) was bending backwards and didn't fit exactly as it should w/ the contour of the inside of the plane. It was not only poised to jab you in the face if you accidentally moved upwards while sleeping but was folding back enough so you could see down into whatever is below on the side of the aircraft, with dust and junk all caked together. Not exactly pleasant.
