Mrs. DUF, Mirco DUF and myself want to go on a little tour trough the wonderful nature surrounding Las Vegas in December and we were looking for a small 4WD.
But when trying to make a reservation we find that from October onward almost all car types (but a few standard ones) are either showing "sold out" or "not available" No 4WDs, luxury cars, convertibles, mini vans etc.
Australian customer service has no idea why this is. Can anyone shed some light on this? Or is it just too early and they have not loaded the rates yet?

What location are you checking?
I found the Four Queens location to be really excellent and they had four-wheel-drives (and for far better prices than other locations). Call the location directly and ask. The manager has been willing to deliver the car (and even pick-up/drop-off at the airport) when Avis told me they couldn't do it.

Thanks! I was just looking at the airport and assumed if they are out of cars / have no rates then the rest of the town would be as well. But now checking Four Queens they do have many more cars available. Thanks for the tip. I might even call them and see whether they can give me a better rate.

I have been trying to find out for a long time now and still do not have an answer. I have talked with LV diretly, they do not know. I have talked with Customer Service, they do not know. It has been limited for quite a while now, not just December. You can call and "request" a rental, and they will call you back in a few days with an answer.
From what I am told, it has something to do with the bad economy and less traffic in LV. When I told them (LV)I booked with Dollar the agent said, "I hope they have a car for you." The LV agent was very, very pleasant and tried to be helpfull...under the circumstances.
