Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Seat 15A on a CX 77A for JFK-HKG
Just booked a seat in J on the Cathay JFK-HKG non-stop flight.
Seats assignments are hard to come by at moment and although on the way home I got 19K (generally accepted to be good by seatguru and seatexpert) on the way there I am in 15A at the moment.
Seatguru calls 15A an average seat and notes that 16A has a mis-aligned window.
However, Seatexpert does not like 15A and complains of no window and the noise from people using the self-service snack bar.
Does anybody have any experience on this flight that can tell me more about this seat? Is the window correctly aligned? Should I be worried about noise from the snack bar?
Also - if something in row 12 opens up is the nearness to the lavatory really a big issue? (i.e. can you hear people in there?)
Thanks in advance for any advice/opinions...
P.S. - asking this in the AAdvantage forum cause you guys know everything and I am earning AAdvantage miles for the flight (plus the double bonus currently offered!)

2. You might be overthinking this. Have to agree that the one thing the guys here know is the best place to ask a question.
Moving to the CX forum for the experts there to assist with your questions.

Sorry guys - not sure why wanting to have a good seat is overthinking things. Particularly on a flight where I want to sleep and I am sensitive to noise.
I will figure it out on my own...
To the OP,
I sat 17K before. And I recall that seat 16K has 1 window and its directly behind the seat, so kind of pointless. A friend of mine sat row 12 and he said he didn't hear any washroom noise.

My wife and I always choose 11K and 12K - we think they are the best J seats on the plane. The lav sees minimal traffic and mostly from the rear cabin, so noise and traffic are not a problem

Have you sat towards the back before? I agree that 11 and 12 are good rows, but I find that the front rows (including the mini-cabin, 11 and 12) are usually quite full. In both May and June HKG-JFK I found the back rows of J empty, and moved myself there to get more quiet and less potential intrusion from people turning on/off lights. This was a moot point in 2008 when those flights were routinely sold out in J anyway. I didn't fly on 77A in July so can't speak to it last month, but CX auto assigns seats front-to-back so you can get lucky and score in the back, especially in the middle seats (D and H I think).
That said, my only time in the mini cabin was last year...some guy insisted on leaving his windows open all flight and all eights seats there were flooded with light. Refused to sit up there since, hence my more neutral impression. I'm flying to YYZ in a few weeks in J just changed my seat to 11k after reading this figure it's time for a change of scenery.

My cousin flew in 15A on the same flight and I asked him how it was given its location. He said he loved it, especially since it had some extra "shelf" room. He said the noise, if any, from the galley was not a problem and didn't notice it. To the FAs' credit they keep the curtain closed and seem to make an effort to keep the noise down. Personally, I like 20A/K. But YMMV.
Inlanikai - I'm curious, why 20A/K? I've always flown in the mini-cabin (11/12) but have been allocated 20K on CX830 twice in the next couple of months and was thinking to stay put rather than switch so i found your comment of interest.

Seatexpert seems to like both rows 19 and 20 (I am in 19K on my return flight)....
I will let Inlanikai respond, but my guess is that it is a good balance between being far enough forward to get out quickly and be served food first but far enough back so you aren't being passed by people going up to the galley and lavs as often.

For me, primarily I like the more open space. Yes, the seats might be a little closed off as is, so the sense of an open cabin counteracts that to some extent during 16 hours. Row 20 is just "north" of mid-cabin so you get served meals a little earlier than further back and it is far enough away from the first row of econ that any 2-month old parked there is out of ear-shot yet far enough back from any activity of the galley (although they the FAs do a good job of trying to keep quiet). It's a good compromise IMO. But, maybe one day I'll try the mini-cabin and see what I've been missing. ;)
