Thanks for that. ^

Haven't owned a MC in years and despite my bank offering them don't plan to change, thought guess it'll mean more sales pitches in-branch, by email and over the phone I'll have to dodge.

An interesting tidbit from the FP article...

The card will debut alongside the Calgary carrier's new loyalty program this fall.

This article was in a travel/loyalty supplement of the Vancouver Sun this morning. Still no formal launch date.

“Simple, straightforward and easy to use”: Lauri Feser, WestJet's vice president of marketing, says these are the hallmarks of WestJet's new rewards program, to be launched before the end of the year.

“We learned from our research that a significant number of travellers get frustrated with the complexity of the traditional loyalty rewards programs,” she says. “So, in designing our program, we have taken a totally different approach, so that it is very transparent and very simple to use.”

“We also learned that most people don't fly enough any more to earn enough to go anywhere they want to go,” she adds. “This is why there are two components to the program and two ways to earn reward dollars.”

For its rewards program, WestJet has joined with RBC Royal Bank and MasterCard to offer a new co-branded travel rewards credit card that will allow customers (“guests” in WestJet parlance) to earn WestJet dollars to purchase or reduce the cost of flights.
“We've very pleased to be working with both Mastercard and WestJet,” says Sean Amato-Gauci, RBC's vice president of credit cards. “We feel this is a very strong set of complimentary brands and we're proud to be bringing them to the market together. WestJet, like RBC, is one of Canada's most admired corporate cultures. We're pleased to be partnered to bring what we believe to be one of the best travel rewards to the market.”

Feser says she expects the program to have broad appeal to people who travel very little, as well as to frequent and average travellers.

“The credit card program allows the average traveller and the non-traveller a mechanism for earning WestJet rewards,” she explains.

Whenever the cardholder uses the card for any type of purchase, reward dollars accumulate in the “travel bank” for immediate or future use toward the cost of travel.

Wonderful news..just hope the program and card are available before December as I am leaving for Mexico for the winter. So glad Wesjtet has taken on Mexico, makes traveling there so much easier not having to go through the U.S.

Hmmm !

I am usually a fan of Westjet. But this doesn't inspire me at all. There are already lots of "cashback" cards out there.

If this is the best they can come up with they should have stuck with Air Miles.

With less than two months remaining to the end of the year, is there any update on the details of the program yet? The RBC website still makes no reference to it whatsoever. Ditto for WS's website of course.

Have to agree with you CanuckFlyHigh, as soon as I see WS sales I'm at AC's site looking for the match.
