I am interested in renting a 12 passenger van in Seattle. I have made a reservation with budget. The catch is that I am 21. I have a buddy that works for budget at the seattle airport and gave me a couple codes that waived the under age fee in a previous rental.

i am renting the van from a different location in seattle. i have the codes entered in there again in my reservation. but since it is a 12 passenger van I want to know whether they will rent to me at all, even with the codes. they didn't ask anything over the phone when i made the reservation.

They wouldn't say anything on the phone since you could be anybody if you're not there in person. I just read the master list of underage fees by state and city and found the following

Seattle
$27
You must be a minimum of 25 years of age to rent a luxury, mini van, full-size van, full-size SUV, premium SUV, specialty car or pick-up truck.

So even if the $27 would be waived via the code, they would still deny the rental as it's a vehicle you're not yet eligible to rent. Here's the link:

Sorry! I just turned 25 and trust me, it's a wonderful feeling... ;)

Gee, I wonder what would happen if an underage renter booked one of the "acceptable" car classes, such as a small SUV, and the location didn't have one, only a larger full size SUV....

Hertz has a similar requirement. If you look at the terms and conditions of their underage fee waiver PC, it says you can't rent expensive specialty vehicles along those lines.

Depends on the company. When I was under 25 I always booked what I was allowed to rent, but often got upgraded into SUVs, convertibles, luxury cars, etc. when the location was running tight. Avis offered me an upgrade into a Cadillac once but then saw that I was under 25. Interestingly, the system didn't alert them until after the contract was printed, so technically I could've signed and gone in that car. Enterprise flat out refused once and dishonoured my reservation, cause all they had was a panel van (which I honestly would've been fine with) and I had to be 25 because apparantly the van "wasn't insured for drivers under the age of 25".

So what did you do since you were presumably counting on getting your reservation honored in good faith? Did you tell Enterprise that them unilaterally not honoring your reservation makes their system seem unreliable and untrustworthy?
