Amtrak Guest Rewards - Cheapest ticket to earn points for Power Points?
I'm going to be riding the Pacific Surfliner from Los Angeles to Burbank Airport this month and it prices out at $7.00 ($6.30 with my AAA discount). Is it possible this will be the cheapest ticket purchasebale? It's less expensive than I used to spend on Metro North Commuter Railroad to go from Rye, NY to New York City.

Glendale to Union Station (GDL-LAX) is even cheaper at around $3. Our very own chuljin has many stories to tell of great point runs on said route.
Search FT for that handle for some of the stories...but for the truly deep stuff, search Another Place (http://discuss.amtraktrains.com). ;)

One of the risks of an ultra-cheap ticket is that the ride may be ultra-short (just a few minutes), in which case, there is a real possibility that your ticket will not be collected, and you won't get credit, and you'll have to contact Amtrak for credit, and they'll never give it to you. ;)

I just make sure to find a conductor and have them lift my ticket to avoid that problem.

My three-year-old daughter gets 100 points per trip for $2.92 per ticket from Harrisburg (HAR) to Elizabethtown (ELT) on the Keystone. Of course, she needs me to go with her and use a AAA discount...

Well, a child in the exact same situation as yours could travel from GDL to LAX for $2.48.
But we're really splittin' hairs now... ;)
It does appear that Amtrak has raised prices from GDL to LAX, unfortunately (which also seems to resonate with something chuljin indicated in a recent post)--an adult with no discount now carries a $5.50 fare. Still a pretty darn good deal!

Cary to Raleigh, NC is $2.50 for a regular adult fare.

I admit defeat. ;)
