Does anyone know of any loopholes to get out of paying to check luggage? I am traveling from BWI to MIA on airtran. They want to charge me $15 for one bag and $25 for the second.

If you upgrade to biz class your bag fees are waived, but of course you're paying the upgrade fee instead. But at least you get a bigger seat and free drinks!

Yes, you can upgrade when you check-in on-line 24 hours in advance and get waived luggage fees.

Looking at their policies, it appears that even elites must pay for baggage. Is that really true? What other airline charges elites for baggage?

Business class - 2 free bags
Elite - 2 free bags
Corp - 1 free bag

Everyone else pays $15.00 for 1st, $25.00 for 2nd, $50.00 for 3rd or more.

I figured out a full proof method of getting out of bag fees. The next time you're at the AirTran ticket counter, take your left foot and place is behind your right foot and perform a military style "bout face", and march over to the Southwest ticket counter..

Works every time..

On my flight home yesterday the gate agents were waiving the $15 checked luggage fee to any passengers at the gate wishing to check their carry-on luggage.

So, if you can manage to get past security with all your luggage you may be able to have your luggage checked for free.

Note that this offer was only announced at my destination airport as I was coming back home.

I have overheard flight attendants tell passengers that could not find overhead bin space that they could check their luggage for free.
