California - Horizon Air to Offer SJC-Mammoth nonstops this winterView Full Version : Horizon Air to Offer SJC-Mammoth nonstops this winter JerryFF Aug 3, 09, 8:45 pm http://www.alaskasworld.com/newsroom/QXnews/QXstories/QX_20090803_075606.asp?CID=QX_FT_090803MMH kenish Aug 3, 09, 10:09 pm It will be interesting to see how it does. QX service from LAX-MMH is subsidized by the development group who bought Mammoth intending to turn it into a high-end, high-roller resort. Their plans seem to have run aground. I was there last week and probably 2/3 of the new development is vacant. Most of the fancy "see and be seen" restaurants, expensive botiques, etc. have closed their doors while most of the longtime "mom and pop" places in town are hanging in there. A colleague purchased a new condo for $350k that previewed for $1.2M only 18 months ago. My take on this is the well-heeled ski crowd would rather go to Vail, etc. and Mammoth will revert back to the inexpensive, family-friendly ski town of 5 years ago. It was sad seeing the new "village" all boarded up, just wondering if MMH will ever attract the customer base who would rather fly than drive. |
