Avis - BSL/MLH: question on Swiss vignette

We'll be off to Basel-Mulhouse airport soon. Avis have depots on both the French and Swiss sides of the airport.

If we rent in France and go to Switzerland during our stay, do the cars have the Swiss motorway toll vignette? (I e-mailed Avis with this question last week but had no reply.)

Thanks.

Just to be safe, ask for a car with a swiss license plate and you should be all set. I've done it in the past without any hassle.

Also when you get your "swiss" car, make sure that Avis gives you a triangle and a yellow jacket (or that it's already in the car) otherwise you'll have to pay a 135 euros fine (or 90 if only one of the two is missing.

I had to learn it the hard way last time I rented.

Let us know how it goes

Thanks, matincdg. Good advice. Do you know if you can specify Swiss plates in advance?

I got a response from Avis today. It didn't answer my question, just seemed to be a cut-and-paste saying that cars on Swiss motorways need a vignette costing 40 CHF.

Looking at the rates, French rentals are cheaper than Swiss for our dates by more than 40 CHF, so from a purely financial point of view, it would be worth renting on the French side and buying a vignette if we cross over.

I don't think you can specify in advance as it pretty much depends on what's available when you arrive.
