Asiana Club - Any tips for flying OZ JFK-ICN in F?

Hi all!

I just took the bar exam today and I will be flying to TPE tomorrow on an F award, JFK-ICN-NRT-TPE, with the JFK-ICN segment on Asiana.

I've never flown Asiana before (except one short-haul in Asia many years ago), so can anyone give me any tips on maximizing my experience, in terms of service on board / on the ground, and any special perks Asiana offers that might be overlooked by a newbie passenger? I usually fly only UA.

Also, if I understand correctly, JFK-ICN is operated with "old" F seats, is that correct? Are they still good? Are there any special food offerings (caviar, bibimbap, etc.) served from JFK to ICN? At JFK, is there an elite security line for OZ? And OZ uses a contract lounge on the land side, right?

Thanks!!

Bibimbap or ssam bap is actually standard offerings, not special, you get those even in Y, but in different settings.

Don't expect much in terms of food as this is a redeye flight, they have scaled back a lot unlike in the past. The truly "special" with OZ in F are nice PJ, Bvlgari amenity kit, and gift at the end of flight.

Hope all goes well with the exam...

First off, Asiana has a pretty good product, it should have the new seats, unless you get the "lone" 747 that has the old seats, but unlikely. The seats are single, 180' lie-flat, you can see my review of the seat here... (http://www.flickr.com/photos/thezipper/sets/72157606049804575/)look in this set for food pictures, etc. The lounge pics are from last year before they moved, but still similar offerings as others have noted. Try for seats 1A or 1K... if you haven't got a seat assignment yet...

They do provide PJ's and a nice amenity kit. The lounge at JFK is a contact lounge, but if you get there earlier, you can use the Swiss lounge until it closes (*A)

You should have access to the F lounge in ICN, before your flight to NRT and onward to TPE, so you have a chance to shower and get some food... sounds like you are doing the same itin as myself and my g/f when we head back to TPE to see her family over Christmas... so be sure to head over to the ANA F lounge at NRT for a few hours of bliss and a great noodle bar.

Enjoy the flight!

But only if the OP is actually flying F from ICN onward. Nice pictures BTW.

Nice photos, but OP is flying JFK-ICN, rather than from ICN, what you have is totally different from inbound flight. It is a lot less quality as it is redeye, and also no dim sum as midflight snack, that is only for flights out of ICN.

Thanks... it sounded like the OP was connecting in ICN to the UA flights via NRT... similar to what I'm doing... (I was assuming they were flying F the whole way)

Bummer... well I guess I'll have to "make do" with what they serve... is there anything for a mid-flight snack on this flight? or are we relegated to "cup noodle"

Thanks all for the feedback! I am sitting in "The Lounge" at JFK now waiting for my flight.

thezipper correctly guessed that I am flying F from ICN onward, on UA.

I am connecting to ICN-NRT and NRT-TPE, both in F on UA. So I can still use the OZ F lounge in ICN, for flying *A F, right?

Correct, you can use both F lounge at ICN, the one in main terminal, and the one in concourse A, that is where UA flight departs from. The UA gate shouldn't be that far from the OZ lounge. OZ flights use main terminal.

The F lounge at Concourse A is a little smaller than the F lounge at main terminal, but it has the same showers and same food. Mind you once you get to concourse A you can't get back to the main concourse as they check boarding passes make sure you are at the right terminal. So I recommend you stay at the main terminal longer, as there are more shops there to walk around, as you have 6 hours connecting time.

All inbound flights from US to ICN serve the same thing in F, udon soup or korean instant hot & spicy noodle soup. They were both serve in a big bowl.

How early can an OZ F passenger check-in at JFK? I would like to check-in early, get my F boarding pass, and inspect the LX F lounge until they kick me out. Never been to that lounge and I'd love to try it.

The LX First lounge is rather tiny actually. There are some hot food offerings and the usual selection of beverages. I actually find the lounge to be very similar to LH SEN lounges at FRA, etc. It can be quite crowded due to its size. The LX business class lounge is nice, but nothing striking. They do have some very nice massage chairs in a quiet room. There are also great views of planes parked out the windows. Showers are ok as well, nothing that special but they do the trick. It's a pity you can't access the new LH JFK lounge in T1, which is after security, as that SEN lounge is really terrific.

My tip:

Sit back, relax and enjoy great service & cuisine and indulge in fine Champagne and wines... Is there any other way...?

Oz are great, a huge step up on UA, you won't go back to UA on this route after the Oz experience...

Cheers,

Just got off OZ 201 in first class from LAX-ICn.. ALthough there was no caviar, the entire trip experience was sensasational. Food was better than my previous NH trip in first and there were two wonderful champagnes ( Tattinger Comtes and a great brut reserve Charles Heidsick ).. Enjoy the marvelous service.. Pretty impressive... ENJOY..

Will take OZ JFK-ICN in F connecting on to an OZ flight in C (two class cabin, no F). Do I have access to the F lounge at ICN?

You should already know the standard star alliance rules, F lounge access for departing in F flights only, doesn't matter if your flight has no F because it is 2 class. If you can ask the agent at checkin JFK to print you a F lounge pass for use at ICN, then it is not a problem. Otherwise, who knows.

Otherwise, who knows.

This is exactly the reason that I was asking the question. I am fully aware of the standard star alliance rules. However, on the other hand, I also had many accesses to the F lounges when arrived in F and departing in C by showing the arrival flight F boarding pass stub. Just wanted to know the experiences of the other FT'ers at ICN.

Like I said before, why don't you try to ask the agent at JFK to write you a F lounge invite for ICN, then you don't need to worry about being rejected.

I have succeed to do that in ORD, well actually the agent just write it on the yellow F lounge invite specifically for ICN.
