Hi,
I wish to make a reward reservation for 2 px in busniess class from Manchester to Singapore, flight not until May 2010.
1) Am I correct is thinking that will be zone 1 > zone 7, 80k miles per px in economy, or 60k + £ 270 each in business?
2) Am I correct in thinking that it is better to book now rather than wait for a) the bmi programme to be taken over by Lufthansa and therefore maybe a worse deal or b) the seats to go.
thanks as always!

Always good to get something confirmed now, however, if the fuel surcharge drops in the future (SQ's is currently relatively high), you'll have to cancel and rebook to get it re-priced.

I suppose it depends how confident you are that SIN-MAN will still exist by next May. Being positive and assuming it is then if you are sure of your plans you may as well book now.
If DC is to become M&M then we will have a reasonable notice period of that I am sure so I wouldn't worry about that. Seats being taken is a possibility which is why I say book now to avoid disapointment.
Note the "taxes" on SQ in business class out of the UK are going to be very big. Their fuel surcharge is quite high (around £70) and you will have to pay APD of £110. With other taxes you are looking at taxes just one way from MAN-SIN of around £188 per person.
Maybe you prefer to start the trip in Copenhagen and avoid the £110 APD and also pay less miles/cash to bmi?

Not quite - return in economy, miles only, is indeed 80k each + tax. Return in business, miles & cash, is 60k + £405 + tax (the cash element is subject to the same class multiplier as the miles).
It would indeed be Z1-Z7, which is priced at:
For economy: 80,000 miles (miles only) or 40,000 miles + £270 (miles+cash)
For business: 120,000 miles (miles only) or 60,000 miles + £405 (miles+cash)
You basically multiply the miles, or the miles and the cash elements by 1.5 to get the amount required for a business class redemption.
General consensus on here seems to be to book it sooner rather than later if you can find availability on your preferred routing for the dates you want, otherwise you risk it getting snapped up by someone else with no further seats made available.
Booking as two one-way redemptions allows you to have a stopover in each direction if that takes your fancy, and for you to change the return after having already flown the outbound. It does cost more in change/cancellation fees if you need to amend/cancel the whole trip though.

No saving in miles/cash to bmi for starting in Z2 at CPH since Z2-Z7 costs the same as Z1-Z7. The saving here would just be the UK APD.

Now that Easyjet are starting MAN-CPH from November onwards, who needs redemptions on SAS ;)

Who needs redemptions, where you have to pay the tax anyway, when a one way in Y to CPH from LON/MAN/DUB is only £60ish all-in.
