Hello,

I need to book tickets for my husband and daughter (2 years old) and was wondering if I have to pay the extra cost to select seats to ensure they will be seated next to each other, or if they automatically seat them next to each other. I don't care where on the plane they sit, as long as they're together (obviously...)!

Thanks :)

Not sure about FL, but most airlines will keep seating together for passengers on the same PNR. Unless the PNR gets split by you, then they would most likely be seated together. It may be worth the fee to your husband to get a 'better' seat like window for the daughter & middle for him, etc.

Airtran charges 6.00 per seat to reserve your seat in advance. However if you go online within 24 hours of your flight, you can check in, get seats, and print your boarding passes free. If you do not have access to a computer, plan to arrive at the ticket counter early. It is very rare that you can not get 3 seats together within that 24 hour period.

Thank you very much for your help. I also just found out that if you book through kayak.com you don't get charged the $6 fee to select a seat, so I'll probably book that way.

Thanks again! ^

You don't get charged a fee because you don't select your seat until online check in. The fares and fees are no different than AirTran.

Hate to disagree but that's not true. I just booked the flights through Kayak.com, which directed me to the AirTran website, but when you do it that way, you select your seats and don't get charged. I have my seats assigned.

You might have purchased one of the higher fares that allow you to select your seat for "free" in advance. They are more money than the deep discount fares that you have to pay to pick your seat on.

I have had many passengers come to the ticket counter who booked through a 3rd party and were allowed to "select" their seats. They even come with their "print out" from the 3rd party with the seat assignments. They get to the tkt counter and do not have a seat assignment with Airtran. If what you say is true, then great. I would call 1800AIRTRAN to confirm anything you do through a 3rd party. It just does not make sense that Airtran would charge $6.00 for those loyal passengers who book directly with their web site, but would allow "free" seat assignments to those who book through a 3rd party.

I tried a booking via Kayak "just to see." I didn't go all the way through it, but it just dumps you into the AirTran system -- with no linkage that I can find so that the system would even know you were a "special" Kayak customer. It offered me up the same seat selection options that I normally get when I start the process on the AirTran site.
