I have a new job (yay!) in LAS, and I plan to commute weekly, more or less, from our home in SoCal (where my wife works). I have a few questions for anybody on this forum who can answer:
Under NV law, anybody who is employed in NV is legally a NV resident.
Presumed Minuses: a) Must get NV driver's license (and auto registration) within 30 days or else it's a misdemeanor crime if you get pulled over. b) No more comps.
Presumed Pluses: No more CA income tax.
How true (or untrue) is each of the above?
And, as I've also asked in another post, please forgive me, how much time do I need to allow on a Friday night between the return of my rent-a-car and my published flight time?

I'll invite folks to answer that question here, please:

You are correct about getting a Nevada license (and license plates for your car) as soon as possible. Lot of people try to hold out as long as possible, but if you get pulled over and they figure out you live here, there is a hefty fine. Plus, why not? Car insurance will probably be cheaper, and registration will most certainly be cheaper.
Yep - no Nevada State tax whatsoever.
One word of warning: When I first moved here from California, I got a letter from the California DMV asking why I had not registered my car. Mind you, they sent the letter to me at my address IN NEVADA! I was tempted to laugh it off, but was told at the Nevada DMV to quickly write to the California DMV and let them know I now lived here full time. They told me that CA was a stickler and some people living here had warrants put out on them when they returned to CA for not registering their cars in CA, despite the fact they had moved here!

Oh, and regarding comps - if you mean at hotels/casinos - partly you are correct, but depending on your status (play machines a lot, or stay in the hotels often?) then you might still be put on their good lists - plenty of offers still come to me, and there are quite a few offers here "just for locals".
For instance, right now locals can get special discounts at almost every large production show on The Strip, plus there are even a few special websites that have offers for locals only. Example: www.stayandplayhere.com

Me no expert but besides the driver's license and place of residence, you should consider registering to vote in NV and open additional bank accounts locally as well.

I'm a little confused between the highlighted portion of this part of your post...
Presumed Minuses: a) Must get NV driver's license (and auto registration) within 30 days or else it's a misdemeanor crime if you get pulled over.
and the highlighted portion of this part:
And, as I've also asked in another post, please forgive me, how much time do I need to allow on a Friday night between the return of my rent-a-car and my published flight time?
If you are going to be renting a car, why are you concerned with registering your car in NV. If you are going to be driving your car from CA to NV, why are you concerned with rentals (and flights)?

b) is certainly untrue. At least at Bellagio I can't take advantage of the promotions as much because most of the good ones I get involve free stays, but I still get all the other comps and generally better treatment as I stop in often and get recognized.

loophole on the dl thing. i own homes in 3 states. you can only have one dl in the united states. i spend most of my time in nj. i have a nj dl. 3 of my 4 cars are registered in ny. the other florida. they are all legal. you are free to drive/park your car anywhere in the us. as long as you still have a home in ca then you can keep your ca dl.

On the comps, why do you need to have them know where you live? Can't you use your CA address for the mailings and such?
May be a naive question.. I've never been comped anything in my life.

I've never been comped anything in my life.
Really? ;)
Well, I'd be more than willing to give you a comp primer anytime in BOS. Though, it would probably be better to just take you straight down to AC on the new Spirit BOS-ACY flights..... Rooms and comps are like candy in Atlantic City, though a 'bit' tougher @ the Borg. ;) It's really a lot more fun (and satisfying) working the comp system, in comparison to the airline frequent flyer programs.
You haven't lived until you need to check into 2-4 different hotels on different offers... all in the same day! :D:D
And, yes, if one does NOT want to appear local, they should just keep their mailing address 'as is' with the casino. Also, there is no rule, you can't have your casino address (marketing) as your business address (out of state) and NOT your home address etc. etc.
Newest Atlantic City Harrah's offers :
Join Total Rewards in AC and play, and get guaranteed free rooms in Vegas. Casino life in a recession is good!

Yes, for you, holding your NJ DL is legal because you legally reside in NJ. That's not the issue here. The OP is legally residing in NV, not CA.
as long as you still have a home in ca then you can keep your ca dl.
Totally incorrect.

the op said he is going to commute to vegas. i would assume that means keeping a home in ca. if that is the case he may keep his ca dl.

baccarat_king, seems to me comps are like FFPs but without first class awards. or if FFPs only gave first class awards to people who fly first class. that
"check into 2-4 different hotels on different offers... all in the same day!"

NV car registration & NV insurance is expensive as hell. My costs literally doubled for insurance moving from DC to Vegas. No income tax is a great thing, though.
Are you planning on actually renting/buying a place in Vegas or do you plan on living in a hotel for a long period of time? (if it's just you & you're not picky, and you're looking at it as just a place to live, you can literally buy a house for under $20k here - if you're planning doing the hotel thing, PM me).
Regarding casino's - if you're a player, go ahead & sign up for the card BEFORE you change your address. Also, get a couple of copies of the card (in case you lose it) so that way you're tracked at a CA resident vs. a NV resident & you don't have to show an NV DL to get it. I get comp offers at MGM properties regularly - and I think it's because I play often enough & my account is registered to DC.

No. Just no. Stop with this blatant misinformation. Ownership of a property is in no way the indicator of where someone legally resides. For NV specifically, go read the relevant NRS if you have to.

I was also surprised by my insurance jump. I suppose one need only drive in Vegas to see how terrible the drivers are here, though. I've also been told that higher rates of auto theft are a contributing factor, although I don't have any data to support that either way.

Totally off topic ;) but,
NH, has NV totally beat :
No state income tax
No sales tax
Low cost car insurance
No requirement for car insurance (if you really want low cost ;) )
Time to register a car : 5-10 minutes
Time to get a new license (turning in a license from Ohio) : approximately 12 minutes

Foxwoods and Mohegan are approximately 1.5 hours from Southern New Hampshire. But, I don't do Native American gaming. Instead 42 minutes from BOS-ACY on Spirit works well for me. ;);) [Or, if I have some time to kill, a 6 to 6.5 hour drive to AC]

Funny, neither do I. I've stepped foot once into Casino Morongo, walked around and walked right back out. As for local casinos in LA area, I've been to Commerce Casino twice and that was more than 10 years ago.

You dont need it to happen in LA cardrooms, they are the easiest games on the planet.
