Fairmont President's Club - Fairmont lost our luggages and passports!

So I recently spent a stay at a Fairmont over the weekend and upon checkout we gave our bags to valet to drop them in our car since we didn't have access to our cars because we parked valet. We told them we'd come back to pick up the cars after breakfast and they said fine. On our way back, we get in the car, check the trunk, no bags. We had the manager take care of the situation and had everyone check all their valet cars in the garage for our bags and never found anything. By that time it was already night and our main concern were the passports. They then asked us to stay overnight so we can file a report with their insurance in the moning, and obviously comped us that night's stay. The next morning we did the paperwork and they arranged with customs for us to go through without our documents, which was nice I guess.

So for situations like this, what should I be expecting out of them for this trouble I went through? I also missed work today due to this whole mess. The only real complimentary offer we got was a dinner that night when we spent 6 hours scrambling for our bags. What can I really ask for and should I deal with the hotel or with FPC directly? My belongings are obviously being reimbursed, and they also made me pay for my scheduled stay there.

You stored your passport in your bags? Sorry, one of my travels rules is it never, ever leaves my sight or my person except when locked up in an in-room safe.

If you've been dealing with the hotel directly I would stick with it rather than start from square one with FPC, unless you were a Plat. Just MHO. Good luck.

IT sounds like they handled it very well, howrever I agree that additional compensation should be awarded (maybe some free nights, or a refund of your paid nights)

Considering how serious this is, I'd think they should comp the over stay....though I must say they seemed to have been quite helpful so far.

I think expecting your bags to be walked to the car versus held then placed in the car when you're ready is a strange request that is apt to cause problems and confusion. I also would never have passed off a bag with my passport or other key papers to someone else to handle. Work with the hotel and best of luck

Just curious. Which property?

yeah, this just reinforces one of my golden rules.
NEVER seperate from your briefcase, backpack, carry on whatever where all the goodies are, like money, passports, computer, phones, jewelry, etc. I ALWAYS carry that item with me regardless of the property, plaza, RC, 4S NYC, Auberge, Ritz Paris, G5, etc.. I might look like some backpacker sometimes (I do travel int'l with a lowepro laptop and photo bag as the primary carry on, but it contains my invaluables) but having lost "luggage" before, at least the hassles of getting the stuff back/replaced are dramatically reduced.
