Hoping to rent a minivan at SAN for a one-way in California rental thanks to the advice from this forum. My goal is to reserve a car and select a minivan in the row.

Would it be better to reserve a midsize and hope there's a minivan in Emerald Aisle, or reserve a fullsize and hope for a minivan in Emerald Reserve? Or is there a better approach, short of outright reserving a minivan (which has much higher fees or no included miles)?

Thanks!

If you need a minivan in the summer season with limited rental fleets across the country, you had better Emerald Reserve a minivan. I was through SAN a while ago (just one observation, I know) and the totality of choice in Exec Select was pretty much 'Altima in your choice of color'.

Thanks - appreciate the tip. I do have a backup res at Avis, just in case it's slim pickin's at National. Kind of seems like it will be, but I'll still give it a try.

For anybody else looking to do the same, thought I'd report on my experience. Things went well. Made an Emerald Reserve reservation for a full-size, with Avis as my backup. National and Avis are very close to each other at SAN, although walking to the Avis lot with suitcases would not have been fun on the narrow road. With kids, I would have left them at the National lot and come back for them after picking up the car from Avis.

Arrived SAN around 3pm on a Tuesday, and was the only person on the shuttle bus. Had a good conversation with the driver. He said it was fine to take any car on the lot. That was my ticket to success, as there was one van on the lot (Kia Sedona) and it wasn't in Emerald Aisle. Not many other cars on the lot either, but they were bringing more out as I left, including another van. No issues when checking out, and the van was such a good vehicle it made my wife and I both consider it for our next van at home.

Appreciate the advice from other forum members, in making this a great experience.
