My Russian buddy tells me that October's not a great time to be in MOS due to the muddy conditions of the seasons changing. I have 2 tix booked and resis at the Hilton already for a 4 day vacation in the 1st week of October. Everything can be cancelled without a fee. The weather sites say 47 F average. That doesn't bother me. How is it really that time of year? Is it not a good time to be a first-time touist?

The first week of October is usually quite nice here, it's the local equivalent of the Indian summer. Granted with all this climate change you can't really be certain of anything these days...

I visited in late November and managed to have a blast. Go for it. You never know what the weather might bring in even the nice season. ;)

It should be fine without rains. Otherwise Moscow is unbelievably dirty.
