'we know you've got choices'
always love this line at the end of flights where cabin staff announcements flow thick and thin amidst the 'self important' clamoring to use their cell phones despite repeated warnings not to.

not going on about cell phones, brain cancer and tumors are on the increase ..'nuff said', but the post here pertains to OZ's substitution of 747 combis on the ICN-SYD route during may june of this year. flights were listed as 777's but at time of flying were subbed by the DC3's..sorry, 747's and that these were sans any AVOD (or even in seat entertainment) which was rendered useless on the aircraft. (rendered useless because there wasn't any)

no problem at all with retro flying ..it can be fun, but not when one had chosen to pay more money for supposedly higher service and that two competitors in the star alliance which were offereing AVOD cf Asiana's stripped back service and which were both hundreds of dollars cheaper, could have been chosen.

at issue is the deception perpetrated by asiana management & staff in beijing and in sydney for not advising customers that any flight during this period (apparently due korean politicos being ferried around the globe) would have very limited entertainment and that the aircraft would be 'old'. surely OZ should have accompanied the downgrading of aircraft with a notification to all passengers allowing them to "make a choice" for other ainlines.

competition or subterfuge and greed?

actually a problem, so neither competition nor greed, from what I'd been told.
There's only one combi and it gets pushed into service when a problem with other 747s, or very occasionally 777 occur.

Sorry you had to suffer this issue- but I'm not sure where you got the KR politicos info. KR politicos usually fly KE.

Was the service bad? or just the equipment old and tired?
If service bad, then complain, because they will want to knpw.

Which other *A carriers fly SYD-ICN? The only other airline on this route is KE.

And what type of deception are you talking about? A particular aircraft can be swapped for another aircraft at any point. Every airline is doing this if necessary. Nobody likes this but it is not unusual. There are people who booked QF F on an A380 just to find out that it is now the old F on a 744. And the same can happen on SQ or AA too.
You were just very unlucky that you got the one aircraft in the OZ fleet which is still with the ancient seats.

Just spoke to a friend who'd done SYD-ICN on KE. They have recliners of slightly newer vintage, but pretty awful, as a regular service, he said.

Last time I flew the combi was a 13 hour crawl to LHR, so I know what it's like. Sorry to say I got 6 hours sleep in C, on the strentgh of the booze, I guess.
