If you are using AVG (I use the free version) a recent update recognizes itunes as malicious.

"adding iTunes and iPod files as exceptions on XP works... I did that when the false trojan alerts came about and it is now problems free. The culprit is the latest update that was sent out around 4:00 pm. US Eastern time... Hopefully AVG will solve this issue with the next update. I also hope that other programs will not have these problems... but so far i have run every other program and it does not give me the same problems as iTunes.
Good luck everyone "
