QF service from HKG-LHR and LHR-HKG has a seat upgrade FOC!
Book W or T and get J class seat on main deck, Book J and you are a QFF you get F seat! subject to space. Could not beleive it, found out on the way to LHR the other day. Qantas will have this service until atleast the end of October so book away!

Whats lol?

It's Derby Field, Lovelock, Nevada. Only a 5500 foot runway at 3900 feet elevation. Don't think QF longhauls will stop in time.

Hahah. I suppose I deserved that!

And as for stopping, I suppose they added a golf course at the end so the errant over-running 744s can glide to a halt in a bunker (like the bunker-buster at BKK a few years ago).

It would be tough getting out of that bunker, too. Double bogey for sure.

I flew MEL-LHR via HKG few days ago. I had ticket in the cheapest economy fare (M/O). Did online check-in, and I could choose a seat in PE!! I thought it's a system mistake and they will change the bp at the airport but they didn't and I had a wonderful time in quite comfortable seat. That was my first flight ever with QF - I'm sure not the last one!

Is this a system error or are they actually doing it on purpose? WOW, if its intended ^. I fly UA long haul because QF dont do upgrades :D.

On purpose - see free quasi upgrades (http://theglobaltraveller.blogspot.com/2009/07/free-flight-quasi-upgrades.html). At the moment on some QF flights some lucky J pax get F seats, some lucky W pax get J seats and some lucky Y pax get W seats.

Yep, Qantas have redefined their seating for many flights. This currently stops after October [has been extend until end of January 2010] but until then there are some good seats available.

For example, QF29/QF30 are being sold as three class. When Qantas use their 4 class aircraft the following class allocations are being used.

See here: http://www.qantas.com.au/infodetail/flying/inTheAir/ourAircraft/744-14P50J32PY255Y.pdf
.

First Class is not sold, 14 seats in Zone A are allocated to Business class passengers.
Business Class is Zone A and Zone F (upper deck) with the 28 SkyBeds in Zone B allocated to Y+
Premium Economy is Zone B with the 28 SkyBeds.
Economy is Zones C, D & E including the 32 Y+ seats in zone C being allocated for economy PAX.

So instead of having a 14F 50J 32W & 255Y configuration we have a 36J 28W & 287.

Here's a post on the Pacific Configuration 4 class 744 redefinition: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/12017075-post2.html
