For about 15 days a month, Alaska Airlines pilot Jim Lancaster lives in a motor home in Parking Lot B near the southernmost runway at Los Angeles International Airport.
Every four minutes, a jetliner or turboprop roars in -- 500 feet above his front door -- for a landing. The noise is so loud it forces Lancaster to pause during conversations. But he doesn't mind. Lancaster puts up with the smell of jet fuel and screaming engines to save time and money.

Cute article.
For $60/month I could see people doing it.
But with no facilities hookup (electricity/water/sewage) would wonder how ripe some pilots might show up for a pick-up flight.

Speaking of hook up, I wonder how well that HOOKER did? <EG> Pilots and hookers living side by side, how funny. You think they gave "airline discounts" and bartered for "buddy passes?" LOL
I've known flight attendants who commute, work back-to-back trips and do laundry ON THE ROAD. (within hotels)

Pilots get to go camping too! Obviously I am paying too much for my $99 transcontinental ticket.
Speaking of which - I believe a Greyhound bus driver earns more than a regional pilot nowadays.

This was also the subject of a recent Los Angeles Times story (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/newsstand/977121-lax-parking-lot-home-away-home-airline-workers.html) posted to Flyertalk.
I suspect, having done similar things myself, that the NPR reporter saw that newspaper story and thought it would make a nice feature piece for a national audience.

Interesting...Very creative!
So what do they do about hookups? I guess they could run a generator and leave every few days/weeks to empty the tanks and fill with water. And I don't suppose anyone would complain about the noise from a generator! :)

You too can have an exciting, rewarding career in the airline industry!!!

I really don't think it's any of local government's business how many people I have living in my house: if there are violations that affect other people, ticket me for them. If it's inconsistent with my lease, my landlord can kick me out if s/he feels like it. But if I'm living on my private property and not bothering reasonable people - myob!
Rental properties and hotels are subject to rules on occupancy and such, so I'm not surprised the crash pads are getting cracked down on since that's effectively what they're operating as.
