We were in the Denver area last week....

They no longer let you use cash to pay tolls out there...

National now has a system where for a $2.50 per day charge, you can drive the toll roads near the airport and have the tolls charged directly to your charge card, but....

what this means is if you rent a car for a week, you have to pay the surcharge each day you have the car, not just the days you drive on the toll roads.

Ugh.

Unlike Illinois, there seems to be no provision to pay tolls online. It's all transponder, or billed to the registered owner of the car.

National's plan is similar to other major rental agencies'. Some agencies have mandatory transponder opt-in.

There is a way to get to places like Ft. Collins without taking the toll road and without going down to I-70. I took it once about 6 months ago, because I had a lot of extra time (and I'm cheap, too). It's not too quick, but it's an option if to avoid this extra charge.
