Alitalia MilleMiglia - Carry-on question
Looking at Alitalia's web site it appears that we're each limited to 20 kilos of checked baggage. 4 week trip, I guess I can live with that. But, it also appears from the web site that we're each limited to one carry-on bag. Is this true? I haven't had that problem with any other airline, anywhere in the world. At least not when riding in something larger than an RJ. Given the nature of the trip (vacation), this is a potentially larger issue than 20 kilos of checked baggage.

1 carry on up to 7 kgs is allowed if you also have a small backpack it's ok if the flight is not completely full.
Most European airlines restrict hand baggage to one bag only. The difference is what they mean by "one bag". Some of the low cost airlines include anything (ladies' purse/handbag, camera, etc) in this, i.e. everything must go in the bag. Alitalia is (as with many things) above-averagely flexible on this, in that you can take one standard-sized carryon to put in the overhead locker (warning! European size limits are smaller than American, think 20" vs. 22" bag), but also your purse/handbag, camera etc, and maybe also another small bag of some kind, especially if it fits under the seat in front of you.
I'm always amazed at what Americans get away with in the States in terms of hand baggage!

Rather than amazed I'm pissed off
many many times I had to put my small carry on far away from my seat because of Americans coming on board with luggage that should be checked.
I travel with a tiny hand baggage and don't want to have it within my feet as the space is already limited on board. And I want it to be in a bin I can easily reach in the event I need anything that is in the bag.
Flying Americans are IMHO way too selfish...
sorry for the rant...
Well, I am an American and I get annoyed with what some people lug onto an airplane, as well. Stuff that really ought to be checked bags. On the other hand, if you saw how SLOW baggage claim can be at some airports, you'd understand their frustration.
In any case, I've got my camera backpack (stuffed) and my wife has a carry on bag. We limited ourselve to a single item each. 5 kilos? No chance, but well within the volume limits. We'll see how it goes. I'm unable to get to sleep in the Yotel in LHR (it's 2:41 AM here) and our flight to Rome leaves at 7:30 AM. Off we go for fun and adventures for the next 3 1/2 weeks. :)
