Flying BOS-MSP-HNL-KOA and back on Aug 22nd and 29th, respectively. BOS-MSP-HNL is on NW, HNL-KOA on Hawaiian Air on seperate itns.
MSP-HNL arrives in HNL at 3pm, and the HNL-KOA departs at 4:35 (1 hr, 35 min connection), and KOA-HNL arrives in HNL at 3:42 PM, HNL-MSP departs at 5:15 PM (1 hr, 33 min connection).
Unfortunately I'm flying on seperate itns - so if I misconnect on the return, I won't have any protections for the flight home and will be in a world of hurt.
Are these connections reasonable - or should I move them up?

Barring no unforeseen delays in either your MSP-HNL or your KOA-HNL flight, you should have more than enough time to make the connection. I've flown on NW625 quite a bit and it generally departs on time (since the plane sits on the ground in MSP for 5 or 6 hours before returning to HNL). So just hope there's no mx. or wx. delays!

I, for one, WOULD sweat these connections. Delays can and do happen. Generally, when I'm connecting between different airlines, I allow three hours. Three hours accounts for most minor delays due to weight and balance, or log book signoffs, or minor weather delays.

slippahs is right (as always). I have made connections in HNL in as little as 35 minutes, provided I did OLCI ahead of time and walked briskly to my gates on the secure side of the airport. But unless you have a bad delay you should be okay.

On the upside there are 2-3 flights to KOA if you missed the connection from MSP, and on a saturday evening they will not likely be full.
