Saw this on the Star Bulletin on Friday:

Thanks a lot State of Hawaii. I can't blame the airlines on this one.

State DOT spokeswoman Tammy Mori said one of the reasons for the big spike in the holdroom rate to $18.43 a passenger was the result of a drop in passenger traffic due to the shutdowns last March and early April of Aloha and ATA airlines, respectively.
Great logic there.

This isn't too smart or good for us living in Hilo. I find it hard to believe that the DOT would charge an outrageous fee like this.
I suppose they need to find a revenue source for all the terminal improvements that they've been making along with making payroll for the 4-5 people that manage vehicle traffic at the curb. Ugh.

I read a day or two ago that the rate's only going to go up to something like $4.04, which is a little higher than now, but not much.

$18.43 for a holdroom rate per passenger?!? That's crazy!
