Hi folks,
I've got some upcoming travel on OZ, PEK-ICN-SEA booked into business class. I know ICN-SEA is only a 2 cabin plane, but I think PEK-ICN (OZ334) is operated by a 3-cabin 747. With the new Star Alliance upgrade option on UA, I think I can use 15k UA miles to upgrade C -> F on PEK-ICN. It may be a lot for a short flight, but I don't mind it for the experience.
My question: is it worth it?
Will I get access to the ICN F lounge, even though I am departing in C? Any better seat/service/meal I can expect for the flight? Is the PEK F lounge significantly better than the C one, as well?
Yes, it's a better full meal. Amazing what OZ can do on a short flight. You aren't entitled to F lounge access on arrival at ICN, as the lounge is a departure lounge not an arrivals lounge. Is it possible you could talk your way in? Perhaps, but you certainly aren't entitled to the F lounge on arrival.
The F lounge at PEK isn't anything special, it's the Air China lounge, perfectly comfortable and not as crowded but nothing out of the ordinary.
Whether it's worth upgrading on the short segment is a function of your opportunity cost of the miles.
If the route is being flown by a 747 do note the possibility of receiving the one old style seat bird...

A reminder to you star alliance upgrade C to F is valid on C and D booking class only.

No wonder it only costs 15K to upgrade!

You can also upgrade using Asiana's own miles at only 10K miles one-way.
