Just a few words about this very popular hotel chain (in Spain mainly). With some business in Spain, I (hardly) gained 2 free nights in a Tryp hotel (midrange). I booked at the Tryp Menfis in the overpricey Madrid (nicely renovated, on the Gran Via in the City center). Breakfast for 2 was free (and great), no taxes, no nothing! Very nice award memories.

The Sol Melia web site seems to show that the program is free to join, and that its members get free breakfast on any paid rate. Sounds great.
Does anyone know if this is true? Also, do you have to book via the website, or can you book on Expedia, etc?
Thanks for any feedback!

According to information on the website:

mas Gold Program

During the first quarter of each year, we revise all mas card holder accounts. Those customers who have booked at least 20 stays and accumulated more than 35,000 mas points receive the Sol Meliá masgold card for their loyalty.

With last year's stays and points I should be upgraded to Gold. Does anyone know when exactly in the first quarter these updates happen? Thx.

Have 8,386 points that expire end of this month. Any way to transfer them or use them some how?

Thanks

Letting mine expire so not sure and have not heard anything. Points never post from Cuba so not really an incentive for me anymore

Seems the mas programme has been upgraded with a new level (Platinum):

This year the mas Rewards programme is celebrating its 15th anniversary. And the best way to celebrate is by offering all of our members new benefits, a new category – mas platinum -, and exciting promotions. Enjoy an exclusive world of advantages, full of benefits which will help you enjoy our hotels even more. Because you always deserve more.

Discover the new mas benefits as of the 1st April

All details can be found here (http://promo.solmelia.com/fidelidad/microsite/mas_15anos/sm/en/index.html).

Looks quite interesting to me: 20 nights or 20,000 points for gold (was 20 stays and 35,000 points), 50 nights and 50,000 points for platinum.

BTW: they are also running a referral programme (http://www.solmelia.com/nMas/jsp/C_Blue_Home.jsp?idLang=en). If anyone is interested, drop me a private message.

Good find^ Stayed on a week long stay in gran melia and have to say it was fine - points system very generous I thought^

They are not that generous. I think Hilton and specialy Goldpoints from Radisson are more generous.
Currently holding gold, but I got over 100+ nights this year and 150000+ points, so I guess I'm getting platinum.

If somebody wants to get a referral invite, just ask.

Good program but naturally the majority of their hotels are in Spain so naturally other hotel programs could be perceived as "better" due to their hotels being in far more locations around the world.

I just got platinum, but many hotel managers don't even know it exists and don't know the advantages that come with it (free minibar, free wifi, free upgrade, free breakfast, etc)
I have to explain and show my letter that came with the card every time.

So is it true that mas members get free breakfast for just being a member? That sounds too good to be true.....

Planning a trip to Alicante for the last day of the festival of St. John, so don't know if I'll eat it anyway!!

I think the free breakfast depends on your status level. Just got my blue card (entry/lowest level) yesterday. The cover letter mentions a 50% discount on breakfast. Still think its a good deal if true. Maybe someone more experienced could confirm?

I often stay at the Melia 21 in Brasilia, Brazil. My points have never posted on time. I have to send in a special request every time. PITA of a program. I'm just earning enough to transfer them out to an airline program. Not a great ratio but better than nothing. I only stay there in Brasilia since there aren't any Starwoods or Hiltons.

Btw, just another information for those who hasn't knew much about MAS SolMelia. Every member, although blue..would have 1 FREE NIGHT during their birthday month, applies when you book TWO NIGHTS !!! Well, it's worth of value, and you have to book on your birthday month (using that voucher) for stay 3-4 months after. ^

Tried that last year for a stay in Paris. But as it turned out, it wasn't a free night on any rate.

I had to book using a special rate which was either not available anymore, or a lot more expensive than the cheapest available rate (I don't remember exactly). So I went to a Holiday Inn instead...

Has anyone had any success transferring points from Mas to either American or Delta. The website crashes every time I try and the US telephone number from the website says that they know nothing about the program and tell me to call Spain. I called Spain once and they said their computers were down. Useless!

Pretty much. I only use it since it is my only real option in Brasilia. I then transfer points out to an airline (yes a sucky rate but better than nothing). I finally got it to work to Delta. Well, the system said it worked, I'm now waiting for my points to show up on my Delta account. I couldn't get the AA transfer to work  which is what I really wanted as I gun for 2MM

I've been a member for a little over a year. While I like a lot of Melia's hotels, their reservations system, their website, and the MAS program are almost useless.

On 3 out of 5 stays (all booked on the Sol Melia website at least 24 hours before arrival), the hotel had no record of my reservation when I showed up. Their staff who answer calls to the North American 800 number don't seem to be able to retrieve reservations booked through their website, and frequently claim that hotels that show availability online are sold out. I have found that the only way to change a booking is to cancel it on the website and rebook it on the website.

Lastly, my MAS points haven't even once been posted until I have submitted missing stay requests. Not impressive.

I just joined this program this weekend and booked a 5-night stay for December. The website was surprisingly good - far more functional, streamlined, and responsive than any of the big American chains. No stupid animations or other Ajax-y junk going on: just a nice clean site the way designed to work for travelers connecting via Wifi or cellular networks. ^

But the concerns about the hotels' not being well-integrated to the corporate site has me wondering. My question is this: when I booked my room, the website said "Our gift to you, EUR40 per day to spend in the hotel only when you book at Solmelia.com." Their rate was identical to the large Internet portal sites, so I booked there.

Now I wonder: how does the hotel know I had the 40EUR/day deal? My booking confirmation doesn't mention it and there was no way to click on the special offer banner to print off T&C's. Now Spounce's post makes me wonder if the hotel even knows I'm coming. It's one of their large higher-end Spanish hotels, the stay is well in advance, everything is straightforward.

It's a business trip...but still, it's 200EUR so I feel like I should at least try and figure out if I'll really get it.

Based on my rate, it looks like I'll earn about enough points for 1 award night. Not sure when I'll use it but hey, maybe it'll someday be my excuse to throw in an overnighter in Madrid or Barcelona. :)

Or you can transfer the points to an airline. Not the best conversion rate but if you can never use the night, better than nothing. I couldn't get the AA transfer to work, but the DL one and went through very quickly.

And no, I wouldn't count on the hotel knowing about your 40 Euros credit.

Since this thread has popped up today, I figure I should drop a line about my experience with them on my one stay. (Sorry I can't answer that status match question...)

The good:
- Excellent hotel, the Gran Melia in Seville. Wonderful room, fantastic service throughout the hotel, perfect location in central Seville...walking distance to pretty much anything you'd want to do in the city.
- Even as a "base" member, I had a great top-floor balcony room with a nice view out over the city. Not a suite, but one of the more desirable rooms you could have in this hotel.
- Welcome amenity for me, a non-elite, was better than the typical Platinum amenity at Marriott. (Snack plus wine.)
- Although it was a smallish property, it would do well alongside any of our favorite upscale brands in terms of quality. The staff here would fit in just fine at a W, JW, Conrad, or similar hotel.

The bad:
- That 40 Euro thing...as I suspected, the hotel knew nothing about it. I had no evidence that I should have this offer so I couldn't argue much about it. The hotel offered me discounted breakfast (about half off the "list" price), but I suspect they offer this to everyone.

The ugly:
- Points didn't post at all. I waited a whole month, nothing...then submitted a missing points request. A month later, I got about 75% of the points I thought I'd get.

If I'm ever in Seville again (which I hope to be!), I will stay at this hotel again. It was a good enough property that I'd rather stay there than at one of the lesser AC hotels just to get some Marriott points. But as a loyalty program, this one seems to have a bit to be desired...

Based on the slowness of my missing points response, I'd be surprised if they have somebody standing by to grant that status match request all that quickly...if at all.

Quick Question: The Melia Page reads that one can't transfer Points that one gets with signing up...So far, so strange...But my Question is -in ADVANCE, i don't want to buy Points without being able to transfer them - can i transfer Melia-Points that i just bought via the Programm? I mean, i want to buy 100.000 Points and get the 20% Bonus, which makes 120.000 Points and will end up as 60.000 Miles...Costs 800 Euro..But I don't want to spend the Money without being SURE that i can really transfer them!

So please answer this Question..

I received an e-mail about the roll out of Melia Rewards, the updated mas rewards program, earlier this week.

No dramatic changes, rather a facelift. There are now four tiers, including the base tier, which makes benefits slightly more differentiated. Surprisingly, it looks like the tier added is really the silver one, i.e. the second lowest. However, it seems that one of the key advantages of mas Rewards, the fact that also base members enjoyed some benefits, is kept;)

A comprehensive overview over the new program can be found under https://www.melia.com/nMas/jsp/C_Ventajas.jsp

Also the late check-out is defined by member tiers which is sort of nice.

Anyone know how the birthday free night would work?

Around the day of your birthday they send you an E-mail with a "personal code" that allows you to make the reservation on their website. The first time I was happy to receive it, until I looked at the details and actually tried to book...

In reality it's the 2nd night of a 2-night stay that you get free. And if I remember well, it did not work with the cheapest rates, but only with the more expensive rates. There is a long list of other limitations in the mail.
In any case, after the first year the E-mail went straight to "Deleted Items". (It's still sitting there, if anyone is interested. :p But it's in Spanish...)
