All Nippon Airways Mileage Club - JFK T7 Check In (Flight NH9)

I brought my girlfriend to JFK to check in for flight NH 9 from JFK to NRT today and had to wait in the economy check in line for one and a half hours. Is this normal? If so, I think I will stick to JAL and Cathay Pacific for my flights to Asia.
