Fairmont President's Club - Is it possible to upgrade *within* Gold floor?

I have a confirmed Gold Jr Suite King reservation for later this summer.

I am also a new Platinum member.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to request an upgrade using a Suite upgrade cert to a larger suite within the Gold floor? If it is possible, is it something I should try to arrange ahead or just show up with the cert?

I asked the same question in the NFAF thread a while ago, and the answer I was given is that Fairmont Gold rooms/suites are completely excluded from using certs.

Also, to my understanding it usually isn´t possible to upgrade a suite to a better suite using a cert, the purpose of a suite upgrade cert is to upgrade a room (Fairmont room or higher) to a suite (usually, but not necessarily a jr. suite; multi-room and specialty suites also are completely excluded)

Also, one is supposed to tell them one wants to use a cert when making a reservation or to call them after making a reservation.

On the other hand, why not give it a try? Depending on the occupancy level of the hotel you´re planning to stay at you might have a chance especially as you´re a Plat (got a comp. upgrade from a Fairmont Gold room to a Fairmont Gold Jr. Suite at my last stay at a fully booked hotel and I have no status (yet), so just give it a try:))

Each property handles suite upgrade certs differently. I would call reservations and ask them specifically what you would like to do. The will then read that hotels suite upgrade policy and advice you. I use the agents to tell me if a cert is worth using at a property, as some hotels don't offer much when using a cert... and some go over the top.

Knowing a Gold Floor staff person(for cert u/gs) well at property you are visiting has been beneficial in the past.;)

At the Chateau Whistler they gave me an option to upgrade from regular gold room to a suite for $50 upon check-in.....
