Maybe they stayed there because the saw "Royal" in the title? :D

In Japan, Emperor Akihito appears once a year, on New Year's Day, on a royal palace balcony. He is protected from the tens of thousands by bulletproof glass.
In Toronto, where he arrived yesterday as part of a royal visit to Canada, there was only a metal barrier outside the Fairmont Royal York hotel; inside, just a velvet rope.

Hope they weren't too bothered by the lack of garbage disposal. Or is the strike over yet?

Yes, but I noticed that they didn't stay at the Empress in Victoria;) - although they did hold a meet and greet on the lawn of the parliament buildings, just a stone's throw away.

Lucky people!
I would consider it a great honour to be able to meet - not even thinking about shaking hands - with Emperor AkiHito of Japan and his good wife Empress Michiko.
:)
They are my world most favourite monarchs along with the King of Thailand.

Ok, since you mentioned it... My SO and I had the honour of meeting and shaking hands with the Empress at the Victoria meet-and-greet on the legislature lawn (within sight of the Empress Hotel, just to stay on topic for the thread).
I've met other "personages" and wasn't really expecting much more than a glimpse of them at the legislature (it was a beautiful day down in the Inner Harbour and we were down there anyhow, so thought what the heck). I was surprised by the graciousness and effort that the Emperor and Empress put out (they seemed to have said something to just about everyone with whom they shook hands). It really was special, I am almost ashamed to admit.
