I called Amex yesterday to cancel my Business MR gold card, as I already have a personal gold and a SPG card.

They asked why I was canceling and I told the woman I didn't want to pay the $125 annual fee when I already had a few other Amex cards (with very high limits).

First she offered me 10,000 points and I passed. Then 17,500...

I said, please cancel the card.

Then she offered me 25k points for renewing, plus an extra 25k bonus points for spending 50k over 12 months.

I deliberated for a moment and then took the bait.

Was this a good deal?

I exclusively use my MR points for first class air travel through AC on Star Alliance, so to me 25k points is like 1/4 of a $10,000+ F ticket on LH or LX to Europe.

Still, should I have held out for more?

That is the best retention offer I have ever seen. They gave you at least $125 worth of MR points to keep the card (adjusted for the annual fee) plus more bonus points if you meet a spending threshold. Enjoy.
