National - Phone survey after rental - normal?

I rented from National for the first time in years over the holiday weekend. It was a very typical rental - nothing out of the ordinary whatsoever. My cell phone rang this evening, and it was a lady from National saying she was conducting a customer service survey. I stated that I'm not interested in participating in a phone survey, and hung up.

I provided my mobile number as requested on the reservation, figuring they'd only call if the car wasn't returned as promised, or if there were some other major issue. I really didn't expect them to call my mobile for something silly like a survey. They have my email address (they already sent the receipt there,) so they could have simply sent a link to a survey like every other travel-related company I deal with.

Has anyone else been called for a survey after a rental?

Yes, Enterprise sometimes does this.

A few years ago I rented locally from Enterprise and they had a survey company call. The person doing the survey was being a smart a$$ and joking with a co-worker while doing the survey, so I just hung up. I sent a letter (twice) to Enterprise and informed them of the great car rental experience and the horrible survey experience and I never heard from them. That was about four years ago. I no longer get survey calls from Enterprise....I no longer rent from Enterprise either. I never get survey calls from either Hertz or Avis and I do rent from them often.

I've rented from National about 70 times over the last 3 years, and I've gotten the survey call twice...maybe three times. So it's an infrequent occurence and takes about a minute to complete, literally. The only downside is I always got the survey call on one of my usual slick and painless Edmonton rentals, never once after one of my usual YYZ disasters. :D

The surveys are performed by Maritz Research of ~St Louis. I have received them both for National and Enterprise rentals. I have been contacted maybe four times in fifty rentals.

Yes, National and Alamo will call customers at random each month for a survey of the rental experience. It's a monthy service quality index; for BWI they are reported to the employees for BWI, the WAS area (BWI, DCA and IAD) and for the region as an average.
