This is probably a great deal if you already volunteer.
This is a probably a good deal if you want to volunteer.
This is probably not a good deal if all you want is a free room....

Some of these places seem pretty nice.

NEW YORK – Some 50 hotels across the country are giving away a free night to guests who can prove that they completed at least eight hours of community service between July 1 and Dec. 20.

To qualify, you must provide a letter on the nonprofit organization's letterhead proving that you've completed the volunteer work at a 501c3 organization such as Meals on Wheels or Habitat for Humanity.

The hotels, all managed by Sage Hospitality, include The Nines in Portland, Ore., The Blackstone in Chicago and the Sheraton Tucson Hotel and Suites in Arizona.

The room must be reserved at least 48 hours before arrival. Guests must pay taxes for the room. Blackout dates apply and there are a limited number of rooms available at each hotel.

The offer runs to Dec. 20.

Details on how to book can be found at http://www.giveadaygetanight.com.

Other participating hotels include the Sheraton Tempe in Arizona; the Courtyard Monrovia, Courtyard San Diego, and Homewood Suites Brisbane in California; the Courtyard Denver, Hilton Garden Inn Denver and Residence Inn Denver; the Hilton Garden Inn, Orlando, Fla.; the Doubletree Atlanta; the Sheraton Chicago NW; the Courtyard Brighton, Detroit; the Fairfield Inn Duluth in Minnesota; the Sheraton Kansas City in Missouri; the Holiday Inn Omaha in Nebraska; the Fairfield Inn Las Vegas; the Marriott Charlotte in North Carolina; the Fairfield Inn Cincinnati North; the Courtyard Portland in Oregon; the Renaissance Pittsburgh; the Renaissance Providence in Rhode Island; and the Residence Inn Milwaukee.

I wish I had known about this a little earlier. Daughter's wedding was in Milwaukee and while we were able to get 11 free room-nights thru Best Rate Guarantee and thru Priority Club points, we could have used one or two more.

Wife and daughter volunteer to cook and feed at a meal program once a month so they probably will qualify.:)

You could always use expedia.co.uk 40 gbp certificates. I just got a suite in Wyndham in Glenview last week for $6 after this certificate (i liked the place when stayed there on BRG before:D ). Check expedia thread.

Does anyone know if you must be 501c3 for this promo?

I put in about 8 volunteer hours a week - I called. Got a call back, no rooms available for me for free, but maybe half off rack in San Diego. Nice promo if you can get it...

I sit on the local Board for 2 charities belonging to international organizations (ie. Ronald McDonald House, St John Ambulance). I wonder if this will apply?

Hey, folks, let's remember this is Flyertalk, shall we? I can't believe no one has yet invoked the Flyertalk mantra, namely, "but do I get points and stay credits?"

;)

Funny! :D

I have to say I was just very pleasantly surprised to get a call back from a very nice lady at the San Diego Marriot location and they DO have a free night for me! I will be staying there on July 18 and as someone who puts in a boatload of volunteer hours this is a promo that is very appreciated. Thank you, Sage Hospitality.
^^^

Some details - I need to fax in prior to arrival or bring with me proof of the at least 8 volunteer hours from a 501c3 charity. And it has to be a 501c3 - that is definite, and proof is requested. I am a board member for Greyhound Friends of NJ (shameless plug) so I will ask our president for a letter confirming the volunter hours to fax. I'll be checking in after 6pm so a credit card was needed to hold the room, however I was told I would not be paying any taxes or fees.

Thanks for sharing. Very useful.

Anybody else had success yet?

You likely will get points for the Starwood and Marriott 1/2 off nights/stays as the rate codes are booked directly via their respective websites.

I assume the other chains that give points will follow the above as it appears that booking the rates is similar.

Educators, active and retired military, first responders, and volunteers are eligible for 50% discounts.

Thanks to the OP for the great info. Does anyone know if the educator 50% discount would apply to college level educators, or is restricted to secondary school and below? I can't see a clear restriction in the terms and conditions.

yeah, great offer  I checked a few hotels and the 50% diso.... code was ALWAYS more than the best available rate. I only checked weekends, but I still found it surprising that the LPR code cosistnetly yielded $30 higher rates per night.
