So I rented with Enterprise and the counter guy quoted me prepaid gas at $0.88/L in Canada last weekend.
So I said ok. But guess what? They have to add both GST 5% & PST 8% on top of that, which works out to $0.9944/L !!!!!!
Which is more than what they charge at the pumps!

Actually they only add the 5% GST (unless you rented in a harmonized tax province, which would be 13%). This isnt an Enterprise thing, but rather a tax issue. The tax formula applies to ANY rental company in Canada. The government views the refuelling offered by rental companies as a "service" as opposed to just gasoline, therefore subject to the Goods & Services tax. This would apply to both the pre paid gas and the higher refuelling charge if you didnt pre pay and didnt fill upon return. So yes, in essence you are paying tax on a product (fuel) that is already comprised mostly of taxes.
In my misspent days of youth I used to work for Enterprise. One of the fastest ways to get promoted was to sell as many add ons (like gas, GPS, upgrades, insurance etc.) as possible. Even though we knew the prepaid gas included taxes most people would say "$2.65 a gallon" rather than "$2.65 a gallon plus tax". Buyer beware indeed.
