Good news:
At least a second ST member to fly Australia.
Delta goes directly to Australia from ATL-LAX.
Not necessary to fly Asia from US before (as I did last year with KE)

Is it ATL-SYD or LAX-SYD?

DL is the second ST member to fly to Australia?
I guess so, as long as you aren't counting Asia's largest airline...

China Southern and Korean both already fly to Sydney, which makes Delta the 3rd Skyteam member flying to SYD.

Continental does to Cairns.
Hopefully upcoming China Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines does as well.

This (http://www.examiner.com/x-15043-Austin-International-Travel-Examiner~y2009m7d5-With-new-service-to-Sydney-Delta-joins-elite) article provides a great analysis of what the new service means to DL. It's really incredible how Delta went from where it was to where it is now!
Everybody forgets the rather obscure GUM-CNS Continental flight, though that will be dropping out of Skyteam once CO switches to *A.
The DL flight is the only Skyteam flight that goes to a major city from the US without a detour through Asia.
