I was looking at what aircraft had been using last month (June), found out there is one date 6/15 OZ 236 ICN-ORD was using 74M HL7417, that 3 class 777 end up on OZ 222 ICN-JFK the same date, looks like originally schedule for 744 pax HL7418, for some reason it got sub last minute.
Also on 6/21 the old 74M HL7417 end up on OZ 221 JFK-ICN. It was scheduled for 744 pax HL7428, sub the last minute.
Warning to everyone, as long as no new 3 class planes come to OZ, the old 74M can basically end up on all three F routes LAX/ORD/JFK.

I hope that HL7417 will be subbed OUT of the HKG-ICN run for my flight in November! That would be nice... unfortunate for those on the trans-Pac though. :-(

When it is on HKG-ICN is still tolerable, but if it goes trans pac then it is a nightmare !

Thanks for the info. This bird makes flying OZ an unpleasant lottery IMHO.

Korea president visited US mid- last month using Asiana's 747 pax, so it was messy at early- and mid- last month, which explains 6/15 incident. If I remember correctly, many of LAX schedule were swapped to 777 last month. But 6/21 JFK is sort of surprising.

Curious to know Korean president like OZ better than KE ? :p
I mean why would they choose an airline that only has 5 744 and 10 777 instead of an airline that has 22 744 and 19 777ER ? KE should be more flexible to sub a 744 to 777 or vice versa, not to mention they just received their first 77W. And isn't KE is a more world known airline than OZ (good for the press photos) ?

You're so right. Once they choose OZ, whole schedule goes messy. But to be fair, two airliners share the opportunities (serve president) equally, at this time. I think once 380 comes to KE, KE will have more chance than OZ. For better press photos and many other reasons, 747 is preferred over 777, because sun from back can be easily blocked by its double deck and more capacity, etc. Also 747 has many "parts" than 77W to divide the functions of each room. Although very rarely 772 was used, too (not sure this part).

Do you think the Korean president even knows, let alone cares, about the operational consequences of his choice of airline?
The president chooses the airline, and the airline delivers - they have no choice. Either airline would have to be absolutely crazy to even think about mentioning any difficulties when being asked to carry the president. Put a foot wrong and you could potentially say goodbye to the future of the airline.

I am not saying about operational consequences of his choice of airline, what I am talking about is the airline that represent the country better. It is like president of China always fly a 747 from CA, president of Taiwan always fly a 747 from CI.
KE is a world known airline for years, OZ is a much smaller airline only around for 20 years, hardly anyone know about it except Koreans and small number of frequent flyers, people are often use OZ as the short form of Australia rather than an airline code. When I told my mother I am flying OZ to HKG, she thought I am flying KE instead.

To make it worse, Asiana doesn't have a plan to remove that 74M this year according to following link.

Actually, both KE and OZ consider carrying the president as a huge matter of pride and marketing. And since the Korean govt does not want to give an impression of favoritism, whenever the Korean president travels abroad, he alternates between taking KE and OZ.

Booking my Christmas flight (JFK-ICN) and the reservations dept says "A&B" or "H&K" seats... any chance this will change before december or is this a BAD omen of things to come? How is OZ with A/C swaps, esp for this route?

Here are some photos of HL7417 from my recent ICN-NRT flight:
I was booked in Business Class, but was seat-changed at checkin, to the nose section, which I guess is First Class.
Thanks for the pics!!! Does the 74E not have Personal IFE . Right now trying to book a trip back to US from Asia and OZ 202 is alomost always available in F, but I sure don't want this plane.

If you turn up at the airport and find that it will be operated with the dreaded HL7417, you can probably ask to take the later 777 flight as long as there is space...
I will be on the OZ201 on LAX-ICN next Thursday and I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed that I avoid the 70's monstrosity. At the moment it's scheduled to be a new config Combi...

It does have IFE, but the problem is the IFE is as old as the seat, they put 4 movies in one channel run in a loop, so assume when you turn on it is in the middle of the 1st movie, you have to wait 6+ hours in order to be able to see it again. Many screens have poor quality e.g. blurry as it is so old, some seats also may not have workable PTV. (I have once have to switch 3 times in order to find a seat that can turn on the PTV)
