Maybe a new line of cards.

I think eventually they'll go back to directly issuing charge cards only, and having credit cards issued through banks (Citi, BOFA, etc..). How soon that will be? Who knows. But they're doing a good job of disenfranchising their customer base in the process.

Why do you think they would do this?

Less risk.

Personally, I don't see it happening though unless they are forced to sell their CC business.

How can Amex have a Clear card in this economic enviornment? All cards should be black.

Well, you do need a stepping stone to get to the black. :)

If they issue credit cards directly like they do now, they're stuck with all of the risk when someone doesn't PIF their balance. When they issue them through banks like V and MC then the banks take the liabilty and they make all of their money off of transaction charges.
