How long are you planning to stay? What other sorts of activities do you want to do? (golf, 4-wheeling, fishing, crabbing, jet-boating, etc.) Probably summer. Don't know "what part" Thinking that oregon coast would be great place to retire. Like beach and looking at ocean and smelling/hearing it JPat Jun 29, 09, 8:51 am Cannon Beach is on the North Coast, it is our favorite spot. Try a hotel called The Waves... BLI-Flyer Jun 29, 09, 9:17 am You might check out Bandon http://www.bandon.com/). Check out the Bandon Beach Motel http://www.bandon.com/webfront/directory/merchantdetails.php?merchantid=17) and the Windermere http://windermerebythesea.com/), both are right on the ocean. Bandon has great golf if you're into that. jrhmdtraum Jun 29, 09, 10:39 am thanks jrsinpdx Jun 29, 09, 4:28 pm Stephanie Inn! PIONEER Jun 29, 09, 11:24 pm So I guess you're flying in to PDX? From there, Cannon Beach and Seaside are a bit closer. Cannon Beach is probably the most upscale city on the coast, with Stephanie Inn being maybe the nicest and most expensive. Seaside has all kinds of hotels/motels right on the beach, not to mention rental houses, plus plenty of stuff for kids if you're bringing them. But I would suggest Lincoln City/County. It's slightly further, but you can drive through the wine valley on the way. The Inn at Spanish Head is the biggest place right on the beach, but there are numerous other motels and rentals. Salishan resort is very nice, but not right on the beach. Or if you want something really nice (and expensive) there's Whale Cove Inn. For dining, there's The Bay House, Salishan, and Blackfish Cafe, among others. You could also head further South to Newport, where there is a wide variety of lodging and dining, plus the top rated Oregon Coast Aquarium. Bandon is quite a trip from PDX, but if you are up for a trip, check out Tu Tu'Tun in Gold Beach, which is maybe the top rated place in Oregon (and you can take the jet boats up the Rogue river). dinosims Jul 1, 09, 8:35 am If you're coming from Eugene, I'd recommend staying at the Fireside in Yachats. It's a little motel, but right on the water and the waves crash up on the rocks all night. There are fireplaces in the rooms on the second floor, and little windows that you can keep open to let the ocean breeze and the sounds of the waves crashing in at night. There's also a path right along the water that leads to a beach (probably about 10 min walk or so). Probably my favorite place in Oregon. jrhmdtraum Jul 2, 09, 8:17 am Bandon is quite a trip from PDX, but if you are up for a trip, check out Tu Tu'Tun in Gold Beach, which is maybe the top rated place in Oregon (and you can take the jet boats up the Rogue river). I have heard of it, but I really want resort right on the beach. tatia Jul 4, 09, 11:32 am Elizabeth Steet Inn in Newport. All the rooms are oceanview with balconies and fireplaces. It's on a bluff overlooking the coastline so you can hear the waves at night. It's about a five minute walk to Nye Beach and a lot of great restaurants. T l'etoile Jul 4, 09, 11:45 am I rode my bike down the Oregon Coast and so got to experience the area pretty well. Lincoln City was my least favorite area. I liked Bookings a lot. It is a bit of a banana belt so the weather tends to be better there than in other areas of the coast, and IME they have better restaurants and produce. Tanya934 Jul 5, 09, 9:55 am We did an overnighter @ the Best Western in Brookings 3 years ago. Had views over the ocean & has a restaurant opposite as well as a diner adjacent. The rooms were functional but no air con' but the rate was reasonable & was a great place to explore the northern California coastline & giant redwoods.. And I really prefer their other property - next door to the north, the Overleaf Lodge. Funny that two posters from ROC have found these two properties in Yachats - small, small world! Jay71 Jul 28, 09, 4:46 pm We had success twice using Craigslist, both times staying in vacation rentals near Rockaway Beach. First was a large house just off the beach but they charged us higher than expected cleaning fees even though we did a group clean before we left. (Be careful about subjective cleaning fees!) Still a nice place. Second time was a small home owned by a couple in Portland. Beach access was just across the 101. The place was perfect even tho not on the beach. We were even complimented by the owners how clean we left it. Gardyloo Jul 28, 09, 5:21 pm If you're coming from Eugene, I'd recommend staying at the Fireside in Yachats. Another vote for the Fireside/Overleaf. Very much in the tradition of small family places on the coast, and Yachats isn't that far a drive from PDX (maybe 150 min. if you step on it.) I also like Bandon and usually stop there on my annual or twice-yearly car migrations between Seattle and southern California. It's a bit further from Portland, however. I do NOT especially like Cannon Beach or Seaside; the former is too twee and the latter is too... well, whatever the opposite of twee is... If you're a golfing person, Bandon has a championship course and Salishan (near Lincoln City - yuck) is not oceanfront but also with good golf resources. Well, Le Roy counts as Rochester - close enough. Yeah, I'm not sure what it is, but Fireside/Overleaf are just really nice places in a small community - I've always been impressed there. Another vote for Bandon - that's were we start are trek up the coast this year - we will fly into PDX and get to Bandon the following day - not too long of a drive if split into a two day drive form PDX. PIONEER Jul 29, 09, 12:35 pm Those are both fine motels, but there is no way you're going to get from PDX to Yachats in 150 minutes unless you're on a motorcycle so you can weave between the cars as you speed through signs and lights. I'd say a minimum of 200 minutes, and more if you hit rush hour in Portland or run into the Friday evening traffic to the wine valley and coast. Thanks again ps which is nicer and closer to ocean: fireside or overleaf? They are both very close to the ocean. I think that the Overleaf is nicer, but the Fireside is pet friendly. I believe that the Fireside had smoking rooms, but they are now all non smoking. You can look them over at : http://www.firesidemotel.com/ http://www.overleaflodge.com/ Chuppi Jul 30, 09, 10:42 pm Seconding the Stephanie Inn suggestion from above (http://www.stephanie-inn.com/). Expensive, but right on the ocean, great food, and Cannon Beach is both easy driving distance from PDX but also a good location so you can drive both north and south to check out some of the other towns recommended. (And Yachats is great!!) I was able to get a great deal at the Stephanie Inn mid-week in a shoulder season (early May) about 2 years ago--$120/night for a queen room with an ocean view. The sunset on the deep beach right outside the inn was amazing! jrhmdtraum Jul 31, 09, 5:53 am the stephani inn sounds great. FRom the pictures does not look it - can you open window at night? thanks FLYMSY Aug 15, 09, 4:33 pm I'm looking for lodging recommendations in Manzanita, Cannon Beach or Seaside. Staying one mid-week night (2nd week in Sept.) and want an easy drive to PDX the next day. Will be driving to the coast from McMinnville. I've read the recommendations for the Stephanie Inn (not sure I want I want to pay their rates, although it might be possible), but want to know of alternate possibilities. We are big fans of The Waves in DT Cannon Beach. Beachside rooms are $219/nt. Many of their rooms are recently redone and look pretty nice right now. The one we stayed in last month had been totally redone and the gas-fired fireplace is an especially nice feature. South of Tolovana Park (sp?) is a tiny burg called Arch Cape. There is at least one B & B there and a number of private rentals. I'd check Craig's List or VRBO for listings. Also there are a couple of other places just south of the Stephanie that have opened up in the last couple of years. They look pretty nice from the outside but I have not stayed in any of them. If you are traveling weekdays you should be OK to locate a place without a reservation. If a weekend though I'd be sure and have something lined up. PIONEER Aug 17, 09, 12:34 am Manzanita and Cannon Beach are both largely upscale, while Seaside has a wide variety of options. Do you want to pay for being right next to the beach (or at least a view) or just being a few blocks away? If the latter, there are a number of options in Seaside. I've stayed at the Seaside Inn a few times on business, and it's a decent motel. BTW if the easy drive you're looking for is to PDX itself, rather than to the city of Portland, you might want to go North through Astoria, and then through Longview WA, and then I5 to I 205 to PDX, There are several decent places in Astoria, including the Elliot Hotel. I've stayed at the Seaside Inn a few times on business, and it's a decent motel. Thanks for the info. I'll have to check with my wife as to her preference about being on the beach, or not. I noticed there are a few places with "Seaside" in the name. Would you be able to provide a link to the one that you mentioned? wsucougarchick05 Aug 20, 09, 1:36 am Manzanita and Cannon Beach are both largely upscale, while Seaside has a wide variety of options. The reverse of that route is also good if you're going from Portland (or PDX) to the North Coast. Take I-5 or I-205 North (I-205 merges with I-5 just north of Vancouver) to Longview, then take the Ocean Beaches exit (also marked at the Industrial area/State Patrol exit or exit 36 for you exit # types...as a local, I call it the first Longview exit and other locals know what I'm talking about), follow to Oregon Way. Turn left, go over the bridge and when you get off the bridge, head west on US 30 towards Astoria. PIONEER Aug 20, 09, 7:51 am http://www.innatseaside.com/ There are numerous nice places in Seaside. The Inn is a decent place and you don't have to pay for a view (because there isn't one). It is centrally located between the river and the ocean, and walking distance to most everything you could want. BUT if you want to be able to watch the sun set over the ocean from your balcony, the Inn is not the place. (The weather here on the Oregon Coast as of today is about as good as it gets.) Thanks for the tip. We wound up staying at the Inn at Seaside and it was a decent, basic place to stay for one night. Actually, while walking on the Promenade, I think I preferred the Inn rather than the beachfront places I saw. |
