Hilton HHonors - Hilton Houston North - mixed review

Recently stayed at this airport hotel, and had a mixed experience.

Waiting for their shuttle at the airport took almost 40 minutes (at airport around 5:30 pm); they claim every 20 min. We did call upon arrival. Guessed they missed a circuit. When we did arrive at the airport, the check-in line was very long (over a dozen people). I walked toward the front looking for a Diamond or HH check-in area (while a guy in line yelled at me to go to the end of the line; I wasn’t cutting in, just looking). There wasn’t any sign posted. As one customer cleared the desk area, I asked the agent where the Diamond check-in area was, and she said “we don’t do that here). So, to the end of the line. When I finally did check in with a different agent, I again asked about an HH or Diamond check-in, and she repeated “we don’t do that here). This is the first hotel I’ve encountered that didn’t have a special check-in area.

The Executive lounge (with Golds present) was very nice, and during the evening hour they had a rather extensive spread of food and snacks. But most surprising, beer and wine were free! And rather good tasting. The attendant was very busy greeting everyone, and turning down money for drinks. But his tip container was filling up fast with fives and tens!! And deserving so, he was a lot of fun while not being invasive Breakfast the following morning in the lounge was also very nice. I began to wonder if this is a prelude to their closing the lounge?? (Me, paranoid??).

So, I was very disappointed in the check-in procedure. When I arrive at a place, I just want to get up to my room and settled in, so I take the Diamond check-in area as a major benefit. But OTOH, that was one of the nicest domestic lounge experience I’ve had in a long time.

Wine, beer, etc. is no longer free. Wine and spirits at $4 and beer at $3. I'm sitting in lounge now and the food is pretty good. A nice lounge for the USA.
My only peeve is that I did,'t get a suite upgrade (I was booked into exec. dulux room), but was offered a $5 offer to get upgraded when I booked online. This ,IMHO, will become something all Hilton's may try soon. I expect this will may upgrades even more difficult.
A nice hotel, okay room and blah area. I'll probably return.

I'm overnighting on an int'l connection and wondering if there are any restaurants within walking distance or just the hotel eateries?

TIA

I believe that the only restaurants in walking distance are closed for dinner (part of office complex). I had room service and it was okay without being too pricey.
